Well, im of course trying to be as ready as i can, but i got some questions :) Ive read a book about puppies and i had two dogs growing up. This is the first im to take care of, though.

The breeder have sent me some information and im glad most of it is according to the book, but i gather more information when its not

So, two questions:

1: When potty training: Should the puppy get treats for doing it outside? Punishment is bad, but is encouragement enough?

2: When fetch traning: Should the puppy get treats for letting go? Or should the reward be more play?

These topics differ, so im mostly interested in your experiences in those, but... i live alone and i appreciate every helpful advice :)

1st one i just give the dog a treat after she does her business outside. no reward but no punishment either if she has an accident. "my dog got the bathroom outside down pretty quick" she will just scratch the door and when i hear it i'll get up put the leash on her and bring her outside.

that cleaner "for accidents" helps against the smell i would invest in a bottle or two.

Thank you :)

The book basically says reward with so much happiness + treat when business is outside. And that fetch should be rewarded with play - no treat, but of course, with pay =)

The documents i got from my breeder is... opposite :O

Dont get me wrong :) The book is 300+ pages and the document is 42, and they are mostly on the same page :) Thats why i wonder about the stuff that isnt the same :)

What do you mean by the cleaner? =) ive been told by trainers that i should clean with some smell-cancelling stuff if accdents happen (and they will, haha)

And both the book and the breeder says: If the accident happens, its not the puppy, its you who made the mistake! So dont punish! =) How long did it take before your dog started scratching? I will try to crate-train and be super happy when my dog does his business outside, but im not sure how it combines?

We put a bell on our back door, that our puppy can ring when she has to go outside. That made potty training way easier.

We just said lets go potty outside right by the back door, rang the bell, and then went out. Same thing if she had an accident in the house.

She caught on in a couple weeks.

simple green ><. that cleaner helps remove the smell.
i never used a crate myself, i don't believe in it since i was home nearly all the time but she does have one bad habit which she doesn't do often (barking) though others will say crates help

one other thing is when the dog gets older make sure it gets plenty of walks/activity that will keep him/her satisfied.

Potty training can either be difficult or really easy, depends on the dog. My last dog learned to go outside very quickly, while my puppy now took some time to learn. For my current puppy, I didn't give him treats when he went potty outside, but I did praise him like he accomplished world peace.

If I caught him going potty inside, I rushed him out and praised him outside when he finished. If he goes in the house and you don't see it, don't punish them (I know it's hard to not get angry at a pile of shit on your carpet, but compose yourself) cause dogs don't really understand cause and effect, and will think you're yelling at him for no reason.

Another thing that helped was noticing signs just before they go to the bathroom. I have a doggy door, so anytime I caught my puppy suddenly sniffing the ground, usually in a circular motion, I would lead him to the doggy door and tell him "outside" and then praise him when he did his business.

As for fetch, I never got good at teaching that. I would suggest watching YouTube videos, everyone seems to have a different method, but giving treats never worked for me. They lost focus on the game and wanted the treats instead.

I just read this, and I'll quote in support too. Just got his book, and all of his training videos have worked pretty well for me as well.
