What about on a gymnastics mat? They're pretty solid, but much softer than the ground and thicker than a yoga mat

Bah it's fine. First you don't wanna go all the way back down anyway, second if your doing it while watching tv etc, your more likely to do it regularly (even if you just do it during commercials that adds up fast...well if you still get comercials...if your watching netflix you can just do it between binge shows (it's like 30 second sI think).

I mean just tightening your tummy muscles can add up over time. You can also do leg lifts, and life your legs up and ride a bicycle in the air (while watching tv) etc. It all burns calories and you can do it while kickin back.

Not as good as actually hitting a gym, using an excersize bike etc, but heck it's better then nothing.

Best to get your heart rate up though...if your serious about working out at home try something like Beat saber or if you need something cheaper a ps2 a DDR mat and DDR games can be had for like 40$ total if you look around for it.
