Harris laid into him for opposing bussing back in the 70s, Biden said he only opposed it because it should've been left to the states, Harris shot back that if we punted those issues to the states we would never have passed the Civil Rights Act

I agree that we need to start talking about moving to that system. Though I feel like there needs to be some kind of incremental process.

Yang is like 50-100 years in the future imo. We're definitely going to get to the point where UBI is necessary with automation (once the machines fix machines it's donezo) but we aren't there yet. I guess it's good he's talking about it now and getting the idea out there.

Yeah it was really stupid but Biden is digging his heels in rather than apologizing in general because otherwise this would just be an apology tour rather than a campaign.

Maybe if he hadnt been wrong so often he wouldnt need to be on the defensive so much

It's probably because I'm biased for Joe Biden, but honestly I think what Kamala Harris did to him was pretty dirty. It paints an incorrect picture of the kind of civil rights supporter he has consistently been.

That said, I agree with you that he easily could have gotten out of that question unscathed, and he totally blew it.

The bigger issue I'm concerned about is that the Democrats really like to play race and identity politics, but doing it against themselves is going to result in a lot of collateral damage. In case anyone forgot, Obama was rather strongly opposed to gay marriage just 10 years ago. He could easily be painted as homophobic, despite being instrumental in legalization of gay marriage.

Pretty much everybody has some quote or skeletons in their closet from long ago that, when measured by today's political climate, could be viewed as insensitive, racist, homophobic, etc. The GOP usually is so full of racists and things like that, they honestly don't care either way. But the Democrats make a huge deal out of it, and it's going to come and bite them hard if they don't tone this down on their own candidates.

This is the absolute last thing we need in an election that we desperately need to win.

But the Democrats make a huge deal out of it, and it's going to come and bite them hard if they don't tone this down on their own candidates.

But we Dems know this about ourselves. We know 'we care,' and supposedly aim to do better. So we know going into this we're going to get criticism for our past mistakes. You want to sell your candidacy to dems? You've got to anticipate the worst criticisms about your past and prepare an answer that convincingly apologizes for those mistakes and shows the audience how you've grown as a policymaker and won't make similar mistakes in the future. I'd expect any democratic candidate to have this skill down cold.

And when if we listen to the minorities who are most often the most loyal democrats, they'll tell you they've been waiting for a candidate to stand up for their issues for nearly fifty years. Every time someone gets up there who hasn't done their homework it's signal to them that things aren't really changing for them. There's no faster way to siphon enthusiasm from a campaign than to reveal that hand, and Biden keeps revealing that he's not really looking to change much of anything.

If he's not campaigning for change, why is he running? To have a fight with Trump? Harris can fight with Trump and she's got a clear progressive agenda. Why should one vote for her instead of you?

Because the socialist-style progressives are a fringe minority that have no chance of winning a national election at this point.

If the goal is to oust Trump, the clear path is to go with Biden. If the goal is a moral victory while enduring 4 more years of Trump, go with one of the progressives. There isn't another realistic option here.

You should, given how wrong you and most of this board were in 2016.

I didn't personally think Trump would win, but I said he had a real chance and told you exactly what would have to happen for him to win. And it's exactly what did happen. You guys all embarrassingly laughed that off and did everything up to implying that I was an idiot for thinking he had any chance

Like it or not, my views are much closer to the general American public than most of CE. Many of you guys are way to the left of the voting public, and you'd be well served by recognizing that.
