The topic might seem inflammatory but I promise it's only because my articulation skills are shit. I'm basically asking what keeps people coming back, when superficially it seems like the same thing with minor tweakage each rendition

I love 2D Mario games. They are basically the same thing over and over. I love it.

Because the games were fun and held enough appeal and depth for adults to keep coming back, especially if they played since childhood.

Fun and simplistic with the occasional moment that connects. Like, there was an NPC in X/Y who basically mentioned what many of us have at least thought about doing. This guy grew up with his Pokemon and now he wants to give his Pokemon to his kid.

Same reason people continue to play Call of Duty, Street Fighter, or literally any other long lasting series. Because it's both new and familiar. People know what they like and they'll typically play games they know they like. Getting that along with new content is a plus.

I didn't want to move on from Pokemon. I kept with it into the DS era and bought that only for Pokemon, then they came out with 3DS or something not long after which apparently you had to get to keep playing the newer games and I was a teen at that point and was just like yeah, I can't keep buying these things just for one game no matter how much I want to.

Now I could do just that and get back into it but I feel like I kind of got left in the dust. I think the last one I played was Black/White so there are just so many new pokemon I don't know, and now there are all these different types of evolutions apparently so im just like yeah, ill just let my pokemon journey be over. It was a huge part of my childhood but I think getting back into it at this point would be hard lol

Also adding evolutions to Pokemon that didn't have them for many years I don't like. Rhydon and Electabuzz didn't need to be able to evolve. I also don't like the X/Y things, Mewtwo was perfect as he was those other forms look dumb lol

People who don't play the games keep thinking everything is the same, but there are changes between the games. Hell major gameplay changes happen as well.

I haven't played since Ruby, but I stopped because of the repetiveness but at the same time, I want to get back into it. I think the main appeal is collecting Pokemon and also grinding to make them powerful.

Pokmon is essentially the same explore/catch/battle system in every game. Some people get tired of it, some people dont.

I still play Pokmon but I havent bought a new game since Vanilla Moon and its not looking to change with SwSh lol

I think that I would have kept up with pokemon if I had kept up with handheld gaming. But cell phones replaced mobile gaming for me except on flights.

I genuinely enjoy the stories they tell. They're not all winners, but they are entertaining enough to keep coming back. Plus the mythos and world building they do is intriguing.

I guess this makes sense. It's gonna sound dickish of me but it's coming from a place of ignorance. I think pokemon just makes me wonder since it doesn't seem like it has anything entertaining for adults. I suppose it's a matter of perspective in the end

I think some people just "grow out" of it and some don't. My last game was a Gen 2 one. Ruby and Sapphire came out when I was 13 and my interests had changed. While I never outright dismissed Pokemon as kid stuff that should be shunned like other things, something kept me away from trying out the new ones. I still play the old ones of my childhood every now and again I guess for the nostalgia, but even now I can't be bothered to try any new ones.

I think I keep playing partially because of some QoL changes they've made. Reusable TMs, no more hm slaves, etc. They got rid of a lot of annoying things from the old games.

Seeing what new mons get introduced each gen is still entertaining for me. A lot turn out to be shit, but there are always some good ones.
