So now when those convicts get released and are thousands of dollars in debt, I guess theyll have to rob 100x as many people and businesses to survive.

Prisons, along with so-called mental health facilities, are designed to beat you down and impoverish you and ultimately lead you back to them to begin the cycle again.

Sounds unconstitutional.

But private prisons are above that anyway, so of course they want even more money.

He said only people who make more than twice the federal poverty level will be charged.

Who the fuck is making like $30k a year in jail? This whole thing makes no sense.

Sure, let them rack up debt while they're in prison so they can get back on the outside, have trouble finding a job due to their past, then go back to jail for not paying their debts on time.

"It is a deterrent to be here at the facility," said Sheriff Kelly.

I thought the deterrent to being in jail was being in jail.

Yeah I thought it was just a local jail

I live in Indiana and I'm pretty sure our county jail is not for profit. They're overcrowded and trying to get inmates out of there as quickly as possible, and they just don't have the funds to get up to standards in a lot of areas.

Why should we have to pay to feed and house someone who refuses to follow the rules?

I rather the idea of light labor, though. We should not have prisons where people sit there doing nothing. If you refuse a work assignment in prison, then you should be charged for your expenses.

So you believe someone should profit from incarceration.

Did I say that? No. I said that they should work to cover the costs of their incarceration. Pretty simple to understand, really. Theres better shit we can spend our tax money on besides over feeding and underworking people who choose to break the rules.

Sitting in your ass should never be an option for a prisoner. Look at prison in Japan and you will realize that forcing them to work has an amazingly high rate of prisoners actually working when theyre released. Letting people sit idle for years doesnt make them motivated to be successful and productive after youre released. Japanese prisoners are literally so tired that violence and rape is almost non existent

Knowing the US, it'll quickly become a system of cheap labor for exploitative companies. In fact, I think I've heard about that for voluntary work programs where they pay them little or nothing for work that would normally qualify for at least minimum wage.

The incentive would be to keep incarceration high to keep the supply of cheap/free workers high.

not sure if it's the same in the northwest but it's about 12k. you can make under that and qualify for food stamps.
it isn't a good thing to have because we're poor but it's the only thing that helps get us by each month.

Then when they can't pay, they go to jail again. Yay debtor's prisons.

You can't go to jail for defaulting.

You can go to jail in Michigan for not having the money to pay child support
