Sounds like something a villain would say.

This basically. Plus letting the party know how utterly inconsequential they are going to be in stopping what's been done as well as what's coming, that isn't something worth bluffing or lying about.

dishonesty is a character trait that some good people have, and some bad people have, I don't think it's a unifying trait all villains share though

That just means their goals might be at ends with one another. I can name a handful of villains who are the good guy, they just became the enemy of the party for whatever reason. "We can save the world like this, or we could just use that super weapon to destroy the enemy empire that has historically subjugated us off and on for millennia."

"Some experiment I performed years ago to benefit all of mankind came at the cost of the lives of a dozen girls, and it has filled me with regret since then, but everything I've done has been to maintain order, civility, and to benefit the populace, it's only a cruel joke that she became friends with you of all people, but if you want your revenge you know where to find me."

I think it's something that could be interesting and be worthwhile to deploy more widely in media but it would need a lot of set up to work effectively and not just as a twist. Also, it would probably go over the heads of a lot of people and result in endless threads online about how person had found a plot hole or w/e

unreliable characters definitely exist, though... and we do see villains lie all the time, especially retrospectively as their schemes are revealed to us

its just that there are also plenty of james bond villain exposition scenarios where there's no narrative reason for the villain to lie, and fiction would be really difficult to interpret if we assumed people were lying for no good reason

i mean saying that we should not trust him because he's the villain is the same level of analysis as something like "he was a villain, I could tell because he was wearing black" I think it's a pretty shallow take
