This is literally a thing that happens. Dead serious. Laptop manufaturers build in slideable covers for webcams for exactly this purpose. Its a perfectly rational fear.

I've also heard from a few acquaintances who are not very experienced with computers that they've those warning messages from scammers pretending to be FBI with their picture that was taken with their webcam.

Personally I prefer using black duct tape, as that blends better with dark computers. I never use my webcam anyway.

This is fear mongering more than anything. The likelihood of someone actually hacking your web cam isn't as simple as randomly getting your number and calling you with a recorded message.

There was a news story about school officials using school issued laptops to watch the students at home. Who knows who could be watching you through that camera.

So no, I don't think anyone is actually going to hack your camera unless you put yourself in a situation where you fucked your computer so hard that it'll be super easy to do so but by then you'll have bigger worries than you camera being hacked.

To prove Im telling the truth, the password to your email is <insert leaked password>.

This could easily fool people who use the same password for everything.
