A lot of cultures and languages dont have a term like gender. At least not its current common usage. Its a word that many adopted to help explain the intricacies of their identity and society... and arguing about what you use it for and what someone else uses it for is an exercise in futility.

Pretend for a moment that the word did not exist. Until today when people came up with it and started using it to describe themselves. No one would argue. Its the marriage thing all over again where people cling to the word and insisted gay people could only have civil unions.

Correct me if I'm wrong, which I sometimes am, but aren't hermaphrodites a combination of male and female, and not actually anything new that we haven't seen before? Furthermore, aren't they usually predominantly one or the other, as one of the organs is underdeveloped?

Hermaphrodite and other intersex conditions are not related to gender. Again biological sex and gender are not the same thing. Non-grammatical gender is a relatively new concept referring to the social gender roles of society, not biological sex. There is no limit on the number or aspects of gender, since it's a strictly social contruct. Saying there can be only two genders is about as meaningful as saying there can only be four names for colors, only one legal system or any other limitation of a social construct. As soon as you realize people aren't talking about biological sex the easier it will be to understand why it doesn't need to be just two genders. This isn't an objective measured physical scientific category, it's a social construct like art or law.

Of course it does, because it is bad faith. The bottom line here is that people who go out of their way to deny non-binary gender identities do so because they think non-binary/transgender people are worth less. They will not argue in good faith, that's not the game they're playing.

We've seen this several times on this very board, people who are faced with a well-reasoned line of thought, grounded in science, explaining that sex (not gender, sex) is actually a bimodal spectrum rather than a binary classification. And they still refuse to acknowledge it. Why would gender be different? These people aren't interested in making a sound or valid argument.

The whole topic about genders is so muddled by different opinions that its hard to even tell who is arguing for what half the time. One person may simply think there are three, while another may deny the concept entirely and say that you can pick and choose gender like clothes.

The basis of everything is definitely male and female, masculine and feminine. Not everybody falls completely into one or the other, but I feel like anyone who denies that part of it is on the weirder side of the argument. I feel most of this stuff is simply self-labeling that should be respected as a personal choice of self-expression, but it certainly doesnt need to be officially adopted anywhere.
