...and their family asked you to say the prayer before dinner?

It happened to me once when I was ~13, and it was probably the most awkward thing I've ever experienced. I told them I wasn't religious, but I was perfectly fine with bowing my head/holding hands/etc while they prayed. The mom seemed pretty upset, but thankfully the dad stepped in and calmed her down.

I never got invited to dinner at their house again, but they were alright with me still being friends with their son and he was allowed to come over to my house occasionally. They never brought it up again. But you could tell the mom was not happy about it. :-/

Nope.

Been to several religious friends families and they've all been very understanding and not expected me to lead or join in.

I'm religious, but I've never been asked to lead prayer by another family. That seems strange to me.

It's awfully presumptuous of someone to assume someone they don't know can lead a prayer. It's happened to me though, but I've been around enough of them to wing it. Definite nbd

Asking you to lead the prayer is tacky under any circumstance, in my opinion. But I have no problem sitting there silently while others say a quick word.

Yeah, that's what I had been expecting when I went over there. I knew my friend's family was pretty devout, and he mentioned before he invited me that I shouldn't start eating right away like we do at my house (he'd slept over once or twice already) because his family says a prayer first. I had no problem with that. I think he was almost as surprised as I was when his mom asked me to lead it, though.

That would strange to the utmost degree. Even among people who are devout, asking your kids friend to lead prayer is odd.
