Enjoy the "mythology" episodes that deal with the actual plot of the show while you can, because they get really really really bad as the show goes along in comparison to the "monster of the week" episode thats just mulder and scully investigating random weird shit

Are the filler episodes decent? Or just something I should have on in the background

Not really. Just enjoy it, and don't be alarmed if you feel the story episodes are bad and you love the monster of a week episodes since those are the best anyway.

The series is episodic, so there really aren't filler episodes. Some mysteries are more compelling than others though.

Monster of the week is actually better than the mythology arcs. Comedy episodes are the best

Enjoy it, every episode is entertaining in its own right.

There's a movie ("The X-Files") that fills the gap between seasons 5 and 6.

And then I *strongly* recommend you stop watching after the original run ended.

Literally the only good thing about season 10 was the fact that Nina Sergeyevna was in it and there was one episode that was rather entertaining but it had nothing to do at all with the central plot they were developing.

I don't even know anything about Season 11.

They start out so-so and by season 2 or 3 are the best part of the show.

This is a good list to keep your eye on as you watch if you want to pay less attention during the bad episodes. Scully and Mulder make everything watchable, but the later episodes can just be downright awful when they aren't around anymore

The Alex Trebek as a Man in Black was up there on the epic scale and was hilarious.

Then you have other side with episodes like Home that are dark, disturbing, and damn good.

Yeah be sure to watch Home, tc. It's a banned episode, so some people don't realize they haven't seen it

X-Files is the only show I've ever watched where the one-off "filler" episodes are superior to the mythology episodes.

They were making up the long plot as they went along and hoo boy does it show.

The first 5-6 seasons are all pretty great, but it starts to run out of steam after that.

True. Eps like Humbug, Our Town, Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose, etc. were fantastic.

As if it hadn't been said a dozen times already: the standaone, monster-of-the-week episodes are the best ones, and the main story arc turns into an absolute muddled and unwatchable mess by like the 4th or 5th season.

Fringe. Great "random weird event" episodes, absolutely miserable, contrived, sloppily written main story
