BattleBots is back on TV with a brand new season of metal munching mayhem! Week 2 of this 16-week season airs tonight at 8PM Eastern on the Discovery Channel and will be re-run next Wednesday on the Science Channel with an additional bonus fight. Here's the fight card for this week:



We have a wide assortment of awesome bots battling tonight, from old veterans (such as the powerhouse Minotaur and the BattleBots legend Son Of Whyachi) to up and comers (such as the impenetrable fortress known as Duck and the unique but aptly named HUGE) and everywhere in between. If you missed last week's season premiere and its re-run, it's available to watch online through the Science Channel's website, though you may need to log in with a cable provider or possibly use a VPN if it's not available in your country.

Oh good, mammoth and huge in the same episode.

Also shatter, if I heard/remembered right they have universial drivetrain, which could be very interesting if so. Means they can strafe or go in any direction(cept up on their own). If that's true, then I'm very curious to see how it works out, because that's one of the issues with thwack bots... aiming from steering.

There's also some others I'm curious or a stranger to in this, so now I'm really looking forward to it. Only 3 hours 9 mins to go.

When I hear "thwackbot" and "can move in any direction", my mind instantly goes to Nuts 2 from Robot Wars, and that always puts a smile on my face.

That thing... I don't think would work too well in the 1v1 because it's all about those lucky hits and build up time. Based on just watching Hypershock and Sawblaze it'd be difficult to get away. Though it's still a very interesting bot.

I have nothing against axe backwards, but I hope to see mammoth do well. Mostly because when a bot is made of scaffolding, makes Huge seem normal sized, and pushes the limits of demension rules. You can't help but hope. Huge at least proved it's plausible last year when someone I know said it'd never win a single fight.

Hmm... Minotaur has some tasty tires to chew up in its fight.
In the SOW and Huge fight it's probably going to come down to whether SOW rips the wheels off Huge or not.
Axe Backward and Mammoth will be a weird fight. If AB can get to the wheels on Mammoth it should win.
It appears Black Dragon is sporting a Brazilian flag. I wonder if the designers know and have faced off against Minotaur before.

In the SOW and Huge fight it's probably going to come down to whether SOW rips the wheels off Huge or not.

It's worth noting that the HUGE team brought along a second set of wheels for this season that are solid and not spoked like their normal ones. They're meant to be more resistant to horizontal spinners after what Icewave did to them last season. This change makes HUGE much more reminiscent of its inspiration and Robot Wars counterpart, Gabriel, who managed to survive a full three minutes with the deadliest horizontal spinner in the UK (Carbide, a former UK champion from the same team behind Cobalt in BattleBots) with only superficial damage to its wheels.

The difference is that HUGE, unlike Gabriel, has a powerful weapon and can dish out hits as well as it can take them. Son Of Whyachi will have their hands full in this fight, and I'd be willing to be that it won't just be a repeat of what Icewave did to HUGE last time.

Against Bombshell, nonetheless. People are still pissed about last season and think Duck got screwed in the six robot last chance rumble that the judges gave to Bombshell. This could be Duck's chance for retribution against Bombshell, and I'd love to see them do it.

I figured the wheels would hold up through that many hits. What I was thinking/hoping was that Son Of Whyachi wouldn't hold up through that many hits... but their motors and weapon outlasted HUGE's wheels, so it's their win.

I had never heard of either of those bots that just fought, but that was an explosive battle. Black Dragon was LITERALLY ON FUCKING FIRE for a good minute of that fight, but not only stayed active and mobile, but stayed in the fight and controlled Texas Twister the rest of the way. I guess the judges thought that the damage Texas Twister did at the beginning outweighed the control and aggression that Black Dragon showed at the end, so that's why they gave it the decision. But damn, Black Dragon showed some tenacity in that fight.

Ironically, it seems like they worked better after they were flipped, using the disk as an undercutter.

Same. I guess some of the judges gave Texas Twister the points for aggression based on the early part of the fight, but I wouldn't have done the same.

Duck has an actual weapon now, instead of it's front-loaded lifter from last season that just sort of waggled a bit. Bots that can't self-right are in trouble.

Shatter looks like a super cool design. From the unique drive system to the double-layered armor (a layer of HUGE plastic on top of a layer of titanium) it looks like one of the best axe bots I've ever seen that isn't built by John Reid and his glorious beard. God, I miss BETA. But before I start crowning it, let's see how it actually works in the arena. Against a veteran team like Witch Doctor, it'll be a tough test for the rookies.

Whew! Both teams need to work some kinks out, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the losing team come back in the 'second chance' bracket.

It really felt like something was wrong with Shatter's axe. It didn't look like it was firing at full power at all, and once the head was knocked off, it was over. The driving worked as intended, the double-layered armor worked as expected, but without a weapon, none of that matters.

It's a damn shame.

Most of the robot designs in the poster look derivative of something I've seen on Robot Wars or whatever that British show was called. Half of them are HypnoDisc clones.

Mammoth could probably last 3 minutes against bots not equipped to deal with it, even higher tier bots like Sawblaze.

The easiest target, as with most bots, will be the wheels. Strip the wheels and Mammoth is just a playground toy. :P

Well, yeah. BattleBots and Robot Wars were on TV at the same time, both in the late 90's during their original runs AND during their revivals in the past couple of years. There are a few common weapon types in the sport, and spinners are generally considered the most powerful among them. Hypno-Disc was one of the first truly devastating spinners, and it helped inspire more bots to use that weapon type.
