https://www.citylab.com/life/2019/06/drug-deal-text-murder-rate-violent-crime-data-city-homicides/591130/

Now a new study by economists Lena Edlund and Cecilia Machado suggests another factor at work: the rise in the use of cell phones. The working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) suggests that cell phone popularization in the 1990s helped to reduce the murder rate in urban areas simply by replacing in-person drug deals with phone calls and text messages...

The researchers found that expanded cell phone networks had a much stronger effect on gang- or drug-related homicides, compared to other types of homicides, such as spousal, workplace, or due to hunting accidents, where the effect was insignificant. Furthermore, homicides by strangers were the most affected, compared to those by non-strangers.

All in all, the authors estimate that cell phone usage may account for 20 to 30 percent of the homicide declineaccounting for 1,900 to 2,900 of the decline of 10,000 murdersacross the decade.

wow. I wonder what implications that would hold for places like silk road. did we perhaps increase violent crime by bringing it down?

Drugs are bad, and I largely support decriminalization. But hurr Silk Road was taken down with the intent of increasing violence is a dumbass take

Huh this makes a lot of sense. The less you interact with unsavory characters, the lower your odds of getting shanked

Maybe if I interacted with my old high school friend more, he'd have stabbed me instead of that other person he stabbed

He's in jail now :D

silk road improved the safety of purchasers and sellers alike (all deliveries were by mail, typically from false addresses, to addresses that were not those of the buyers themselves like po boxes, or better, abandoned houses, eliminating face-to-face dealings), and the trend towards purity due to feedback also resulted in less undesirable consequences from products being cut with other substances to increase profits

narconomics went into detail about how it significantly "restructured" how drugs were distributed

that is to say it effectively challenged the conventional structure of somewhat isolated local nodes (united only by suppliers, perhaps) of individuals/entities of questionable repute and product quality with quasi-monopolistic tendencies due to some combination of availability and reputation (tl;dr: the neighborhood dealer buying god knows what from god knows where), and replaced it with a true market where suppliers had to compete to offer the highest quality goods at the lowest prices
