What would you recommend first?

How closely is the game adapted from the books?

I mean shit they have Geralt/Ciri from the games on the fucking current covers so I'm guessing there's a close adaptation there

Or is it like GOT where the games eventually start doing their own thing

I might just say fuck it and wait for the Netflix series if I can't figure this out lol

the games aren't an adaptation of the books iirc, they're sort of unofficial sequels

If and only if you can get past real bad gameplay start with 2. 1 isnt all that and 3 has mediocre gameplay even though it's much improved over 2. 2 and 3 have awesome story parts though

The games are effectively a canonical sequel to the novellas. I'd read the books first, because The Witcher drops you right off at the start of the game with an already established world of characters (Vesemir, Triss, etc.).

I'd also give the first game a try, TC. The gameplay is stiff, but the characters and world are excellent.

The books take place roughly 5-10 years before the games. Many of the characters are introduced & you'll get a lot of backstory.

the covers are just random witcher 2/3 art slapped on and don't have anything to do with the story

Certain things change a lot.

Dandelion especially is really different character wise, Geralt's flaws are more glossed over, and Geralt is portrayed as far more powerful in the games.

You could just do either first, or read the books while playing.

First game absolutely blows though.

Funnily enough Witcher 3 is the game that follows the books and Witcher 1 the most. Despite it being the standalone game for most people. Geralt has amnesia in the first two games.
