Yay! Seeing as this is the first game of the 2nd duology for Rean, I want to play this closer to when that comes out, like I did with ToCS1 and 2.

Also, fuck XSeed for taking Hatsuu off of the credits for ToCS 1 and 2.

Really doubt it. I'm going to for sure play the current patch of Zero and then Ao, which already has a decent English patch. Then I'll replay Cold Steel II. I intended to replay the entire franchise but other games somehow happened. :^)

It's my favorite JRPG franchise at this point but they aren't for everyone. While games are in their own series, they connect to each other and tell an overarching story and later games in the timeline also spoil earlier ones. They're very world building and character heavy, the start can be too slow for some, and there's a shitton of reading. I think it's all magical and amazing and in depth, but a few times someone I rec'd it to me basically thought I had shit taste and dropped it lol.

I sure hope so, cuz Im not getting another PS4 for one game. They literally took SO long to release this game (which the Japanese have had for years)...

I wonder if George Martin is helping them with the translations? Maybe thats why it took such an offensively long time.

I can't wait so I can play/marathon all 3 games at the same time.

I had played the leaked zero patch two years ago. It was not the greatest experience but it was understandable and Zero is my favorite of the series thus far.

I was hoping to replay zero before playing Ao which does have a decent translation.

There is a patch for the vita version of Zero which is better than the PC/PSP patch floating around too.

This has been my problem with the series so far.

Lasted about 40hrs into trails of cold steel 1, can't bring myself to play anymore of it... it's just too much reading... at least for me, it is.

I'll probably give it another honest try one day.

Yeah. It applied the leaked psp translation but added a ton of edits from a spreadsheet that were going to be implemented into the final release until the drama happened with the leak and Geofront took over.

The Geofront translation will certainly be much better, but the existing patch for the vita version is definitely better than the psp/pc translation currently floating around.

Yeah I've always really liked the 'tales of' games, and have played a few other misc jrpg's here and there... but this game is like 60% reading and 40% gameplay... half the time I'm sitting there going "ugh just let me play damnit!"

Not knocking it though... the PC port is gorgeous... I would've never guessed it was a vita game... and all that reading really does flesh out the characters. Knowing there are three games in the trails of cold steel series (not including trails in the sky) makes me want to play through them all just to see how the characters' stories pan out. I'll need time for that though haha.

Extremely. They all tell an overarching story and starting with CSII and especially with CSIII they straight up expect you to know the earlier entries.

i just started replaying cold steel 1 on ps4 (first time playing ps4 version, digging turbo mode). i will play through cs1 and 2 on ps4 then the trails in the sky games on steam. already have cold steel 3 preordered on amazon and my body is ready

You're not alone there. The amount of games in the series and them all being connected makes a lot of people feel overwhelmed and turns them away. I don't blame them. And it'll only get worse since we're... 3/4 done, I think? Something like that.

You'd even be OK more or less to play CS1 and 2 before the Crossbell titles.

Yeah. If you or anyone else is honestly looking into playing the whole shebang, it would go: 3 Sky games -> 2 Crossbell games -> 4 Cold Steel games -> ???

With the Crossbell ones being the biggest problems for those of us in the west who don't speak Japanese.

No. Should they be played first?

Yes, first game starts slow, but ramps up quickly after like the first two or three chapters. I've only played that series so far, but I heard that it still has the best and most memorable characters so far.
