Even though he'll say it's intentionally ambiguous on screen and open to viewer interpretation, David Chase refers to that ending as a "death scene." At least in his mind, Tony was killed there.

that's a misquote, in the full text from that interview david chase says that his original plan was to have it implied tony dies while meeting with johnny sack, he would drive into the lincoln tunnel and the screen cuts to black. but he wanted to leave the ending ambiguous
