Current Events > rewatched 1st x-men movie last night, still confused about ending *spoilers*

at the end, wolverine is trying to save rogue and the world leaders by slashing through the spinning machine rogue is chained in. Magneto is stopping wolverine with with magnetic powers. Cyclops and jean grey are on the ground looking up at the situation and cyclops says he thinks he has a clean shot at magneto. Jean grey tells cyclops to wait as the magic mutant mist gets closer to where the world leaders are. This happens for a 2nd time and i think a 3rd time before cyclops just says "8888 it" and shoots magneto allowing wolverine to destroy the machine and save everyone. Then for some strange reason, jean grey looks extremely sad with the outcome of the situation

i have never been able to understand why jean grey keeps wanting cyclops to keep waiting and then looks soo sad when their plan works out and they save everyone. It's almost like she wanted magneto's plan to turn the world's leaders into mutants to happen

Wasn't she waiting so she could redirect his optic blast since they were chained up or whatever?? I don't remember her looking sad though

no this was after they broke free from that, and wolverine was trying to destroy the machine at the top of lady liberty's torch

Phoenix was starting to come out look at her eyes she has that weird effect to them where they go completely black for awhile the thing blows up she blinks then it happens before she blinks again only for her eyes to go back to normal it's hard to see

She looks more relieved with a "sigh that was a lot of work", than disappointed.

Hmm. Kind of looks like her saying wait is to add tension to the scene? And the look at the end to me seems like she was relieved it worked and it was over.

They told Cyclops to shoot the machine, which he said would kill Rogue. Wolverine says he'll go stop it, and if he can't for Cyclops to blast the machine. They're telling him to wait to give wolverine a chance to save Rogue, thinking he was going to blast the machine and not Magneto.

A few of the comments are saying something along the lines of how the machine was suppressing mutants powers and how destroying it awakened Jean Gray's full powers or something and that was her reaction to feeling it

>What a great build up to Jean's Phoenix Force. It was subtle in this scene with her suddenly feeling the awakening of her surpressed power that the mutation machine let loose. It became more appparent in X2. Too bad X3 was a let down.

>2:41 I don't remember where I've heard this from. Originally, it was planned for Jean Grey to become the Phoenix was due to Magneto's mutation machine. Following Jean's reaction after Logan destroyed Magneto's machine, there was a quick shot of "orange static" coming out from her fingers, but it was edited out. That's why Jean suddenly loses control in the beginning of X2.
