You can tell there's a narrative that shitheads like this cop go to. Like the guy picking up litter already handed over his ID, he mentioned it had his address on it, and the cop kept badgering about "making sure you belong in this neighbourhood", making sure he's "not working" or anything. Regular ass dude going about his day, cleaning up around his property, getting harassed by this pig who's trying to escalate the situation for no reason.

He had the guy's ID in his hand and he took the time to withhold it, tell the guy to comply with illegal actions, throw out some "I'm frightened for my life" bullshit over a "weapon" that the guy was not brandishing at the officer and just generally be an obstructive ass. And as soon as the cronies he called in arrived, they gave the ID back to the man and told the cop that the situation was fine. He's a bully exploiting his power.

And people wonder why there's been a backlash against cops in the latter half of the 2010's. This isn't justice, it's not keeping the peace or law-keeping. The second this cop withheld the guy's ID to harass him further, despite having his personal details on hand to confirm, any pretense of reason went out the window. And it's pigs like this that necessitate the use of bodycams.

The stupidest part of this story is that they allowed the cop to voluntarily resign, hes still getting paid for the next nine months, and will almost certainly be taken on by a nearby PD with no issue despite this shocking misconduct. Sure would be nice for pigs like these to actually be held accountable for the shit they pull. The whole system is such a fucking joke

However, Smyly resigned before the investigation concluded. He will be on the city payroll until February 2020.
