The Pennsylvania family of 25 y/o Shawn Shatto who committed suicide because of severe depression and anxiety have slammed a "pro-choice" alleging she obtained "detailed obstructions" from website users who TOLD her to take her own life!!

She was found by her mother, blue and cold to touch on May 22nd in their Newberry Township home.

Jackie Bieber told Fox News she thought her daughter had been sleeping until she made the horrifying discovery. She said her daughter had followed directions on a "pro-choice" suicide website as part of a 3 day regimen that included over the counter medications to stop her from vomiting

She said her daughter had instructions written down in her journal along with ingredients from a recipe with exact dosages

Jackie shared Screenshots that were posted to show that Shawn said she fell asleep and missed one of the steps with a forum member replying her not to worry

Jackie said "Not one person said there is another way. It's like a cult"

Shawn's final message said "Just took it. I'm f****** terrified" as a forum poster said "Safe travels and i hope you find peace"

Her stepfather said Shawn had issues but they were working on it and the website never gave her a chance.

Police said they were looking into the website and the claims as they said the website is evil and warns other families that the "pro-choice" suicide websites exist and should be held accountable as they point to Suzy's law in California that criminalizes websites that promote suicide

Shawn went to Harrisburg Area Community College who loved harry potter as she was big on books to help her with her depression.

A York County Coroner Pam Gay called the death "very disturbing" and questioned why people didn't offer her more help.

The administrator of the website in question acknowledged the death and confirmed it deleted her posts that now has a disclaimer on the site stating the site is to discuss mental illness and suicide from a perspective of suicidal people and its moral implications

It also urges people feeling suicidal to call a hotline and says it's a "pro-choice forum, not a pro-suicide forum. we do not encourage anyone here to commit suicide. We do not provide the means or the tools to do so either. To say that our community encourages people to commit suicide is simply not true. To say that this forum murdered this member is false"

As of now the website still remains as police have not commented if anything action will be done as Jackie says this is not free speech but murder.

I'll never understand how we can make it legal to create life without giving it the choice, then criminalise that life's choice or willingness to no longer exist.

That's the crux of the Right to Die position, but it's still important to note that the majority of suicides are a consequence of mental illness, rather than being a competent decision to end one's life. Whenever suicide's illegal, it's purely to grant police the right to intervene and ensure that anyone attempting it that doesn't competently wish to die can be saved from their illness.

Forums like these are bad because the people using them are not qualified or capable of accurately assessing whether somebody's wish to die is competent or not, so you inevitably end up with them encouraging mentally ill people to kill themselves.

Yes, the US medical system is hideously broken. That does create some pretty major problems in regards to suicide prevention, but I wouldn't say that means suicide shouldn't be prevented. Just that the US needs to suck less.

I'm pro-choice. I'd say this is more ethical than abortion since the person is making the decision for themself.

Hah. Misleading topic title. I'm pro-choice, but suicide (with possible exception for the terminally ill, suffering, and completely disabled, basically those whose lives are over anyway) is never the right thing to do.

The funny thing about 'your life' is that it's not just yours. Your life belongs to everyone around you, everyone who knows you, everyone who will know you, everyone who cares about you, even those who don't particularly care about you, and taking your life away all from those people, hurting so many, just to run away from the problems of a single individual is unjustifiable.

Nope as it could actually help people who feel they need advice on their state of mind and how to live with it. This gal clearly should have been seeking professional help but being as she didn't she slipped deeper into her depression. It's sad when some folk feel suicide is the only option but websites are not to blame. Seems to me this family are just looking to blame someone when the thing to blame was this gals mental health that was left unchecked.
