I was an awkward and anxious youth who both craved and loathed attention, and even as a very small child I recognized and idolized Madonna as the untouchable embodiment of everything I knew I was on the inside but could never possibly be on the outside. I remember being utterly hypnotized by the Open Your Heart video, and thought that moment she leaned back in the chair and slipped off her black wig to reveal her own peroxide pixie cut underneath was the coolest thing I had ever seen in my life, though I was not yet 4 years old. By age 8 I had already declared Vogue my favorite song of all time, and it remains so to this day, though it would ultimately be my performance of Erotica that got me kicked out of junior high drama class. (You can just tuck that mental image away somewhere, lol). The Ray of Light era elevated her to true artist status, and proved you can still be provocative, sexy, strong, playful, and thoughtful all at the same time, and is the version of Madonna I most hold dear. As I entered adulthood I learned to view her through a more objective and critical lens, keeping my distance while she worked through the embarrassing Hard Candy phase and other superfluous career diversions, but our Rebel Hearts always seem to come back around and find each other in the end. So while we may not see eye to eye on absolutely everything these days, she shaped a lot of who I am, for better or worse, and remains nothing less than a vibrant and mesmerizing songwriter, businesswoman, mother, and stage performer.

Her new CD, "Madame X," comes out June 14th.

I never got into her. I think the first song I heard of hers was that Ray of Light song that was played on MTV and the radio a lot back in the 90s and I've heard a couple other songs of hers and I liked them, but... never bought her albums or anything.
