If you are only posting it for an app that can only be seen on phone, go ahead and do it vertically. But phones can be rotated horizontally, while it's harder to turn a TV or monitor vertically. So record it horizontally, to fit most devices.

Always record video in landscape.

I've heard camera buffs state that you can tell who the novices are when you see them record in portrait mode.

Film in portrait, then upload it somewhere that only supports landscape and adds black bars on the side to make it wide enough.

since people are significantly taller than they are wide I think you could argue that many videos people take on their phones have a vertical element to them

Not so sure on the significantly part. <___<

More seriously, by vertical elemental people mean more like things like recording people climbing. We exist in a largely horizontal plane so it is easier to keep track of their movements or multiple people if you film in landscape.

To really make people hate you, film vertically and then edit the video and rotate it to horizontal orientation.

I've seen this happen when people start recording horizontally, and then they change their grip and hold it vertically, resulting in a horizontal video where everything is sideways.
