This board (or maybe just the internet in general) had me convinced it was shit but it's pretty fun. I guess going in with low expectations helped and I've also never played another MGS game.

I've heard only 2/3 of the story was actually finished so that kinda sucks but I can live with it because tbh I don't give a shit about that anyways. I just like to play around with my C4 and blow shit up.

Quiet has nice tits btw and the story reason for why is nearly naked makes perfect sense

The minute to minute gameplay has always been top notch. The problem people had with it was all the drama surrounding Kojima/Konami at the time, and the unfinished last 1/3rd of the game

make sure you stop and listen to the cassettes that get deposited into your inventory without much (any?) notice because they have ALL OF THE STORY. i didn't realize this was happening and got like 20 hours into the game and thought "where the fuck is the story?" then i found the cassettes but by that point i didn't feel like sitting there and listening to all of them.

maybe like 15, it's getting a bit repetitve but i feel like there's enough new gear constantly being unlocked and new enemy types to keep things entertaining enough.

Biggest issue is the lack of good storytelling, lots of wasted characters/missed opportunities (why not young sniper wolf instead of Quiet? I like Quiet as much as the next guy, but this game is supposed to be a prequel), and (seriously major spoilers) Big Boss not being Big Boss. Literally pointless; you find it out at the very very end of the game and it destroys any investment most people had in the story at all.

And while the gameplay is pretty much the best it can ever be in a MGS game, it just feels like a huge array of meaningless side missions with like 5 major "story missions" sprinkled in. Ground Zeroes got me hyped--its 'main mission' was like an hour+ long and it had multiple awesome moments and a couple of lengthy, well-done cutscenes. Ground Zeroes' side missions felt like Phantom Pain's "main missions" with meatier objectives, different completion paths, and bonus objectives to complete.

Cue Phantom Pain, and 85% of the story missions are less interesting than Ground Zeroes' side missions. To make it worse, the things called "side missions" in Phantom Pain are glorified Assassins Creed collectibles. Go there, kill these enemies, get a completion checkmark. "Fun."

Finally, Cassette tapes are a terrible way to deliver plot. They require actively clicking them, plus...they're tapes. Even if they're "basically the same as codec conversations" they still don't feel nearly as engaging because they're recorded rather than happening "live"--there's a 0% chance of anything important happening while listening to a tape. You won't get things like the "Did you like my sunglasses?" moment in MGSV because the tapes are prerecorded and the dialogue within is purely expositional and non-interactive.

It's the little things that are annoying. The story is horrible, there are a lot....A LOT of repeat missions, and a ton of travelling with the same intro over and over again.

I expected a few areas like the opening area, another couple like Ground Zeroes, and decent boss fights. What we got was trash.

Gameplay and Soundtrack are on point, but everything else should have been worked on. No reason a game that size should only have a handful of boss fights.

People are simultaneously too harsh and too lenient on Kojima

Like he has plenty of blame in mgs vs shortcomings, the idea that konami mandated it be an empty repetitive game is lol worthy.

At the same time it was his first open world game on a brand new engine so it's really impressive it wasn't an unplayable mess and actually really solid.

As far as the story goes he had checked out years ago he had no desire to make yet another mgs story

I really don't think MGSV's failed story is entirely Kojima's fault. I blame a lot of it on the 'fans' of MGS who complained about too many cutscenes and boring codec calls etc., so Kojima said "fuck it, no codec calls. Only cassette tapes."

But then the production kept hitting snags and only 2 of the regions were ever completed, then Kojima basically got forced out of Konami and couldn't finish the game--so at least one act, maybe even more, got removed from the game--all the content planned as "Side Missions" seems to have become the majority of "Main Missions" in the story (with vague bullshit tacked onto the beginning of each mission trying to explain how these side missions were actually super important because some dude has some information needed to find Cipher or whatever, even though these characters have no name and no dialogue)

I feel like the game we would've gotten if Kojima had been able to finish it entirely would've been a lot more cinematic and satisfying, with a lot more emphasis on characters and their interactions. For just an example of the kind of stuff MGSV needed more of (cinematic gameplay moments and actual storytelling) watch this (spoiler-filled) cutscene from the deleted "Act 3/Episode 51"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gf6V3sUVw0" data-time="

The time-stamp I'm mostly referring to is ~10:00 to the end, but if you really wanna make yourself mad about how unfinished the game was, watch the whole thing.

Which would be fine. Have a part of the game in Iraq. Let Phantom Pain last more than a few weeks or whatever. This game is supposed to be a globe-trotting open-world adventure, but it ended up having two locations that are super similar to each other. The lack of a snow region really disappointed me, since it would've been a nice homage to MGS1 (and 4)

Play MGS3 next and see just how much wasted potential TPP really had. Still a great game by any metric but it could've been the best in the series in every way were it not incomplete. Really just play the whole series, they are all amazing and the cumulative story between them is a masterpiece

GZ was amazing.

Like straight-up with how solid it was in every department, I'd have been perfectly satisfied if it were the entire MGSV, just with a different ending cutscene where, I dunno, they get back to base and Kaz is like "we're outgrowing Mother Base" and so BB is like K well you be OH West and I'll go to Africa and be OH East" and then Kaz is just like "Nah I got this friend named Roy I think I'll go chill with." "K. Keep it real homie." "Same bro."

Ground Zeroes was obviously completed by Kojima and released without a lot of drama. I look at Ground Zeroes and it's basically a flawless MGS experience--short, but extremely dense with detail, cutscenes, dialogue, and awesome gameplay moments.

They took a small military base and turned it into one of the most memorable environments of my video game career. I still have the layout memorized based on me and my brother playing Ground Zeroes to absolute death--we got 100% completion with S ranks on every mission and all side objectives completed twice, once on PS3 and once on PS4. Dozens of hours.

We played Phantom Pain through once between the two of us, handing off the controller to get through the endless barrage of filler missions and occasionally getting hyped when something actually happened. Never even got close to 100% completion with all S ranks because the game just didn't feel like it was worth playing beyond a basic completion.

100% this. It's easily the best open world I've ever played. Even though it's tiny by open world standards, it had actually gameplay-minded design instead of worrying about feeling like a real base/city/world when real bases/cities/worlds just aren't built for gameplay. It had an open area for "hide in plain sight" gameplay, a claustrophobic area for "hide behind stuff" gameplay, a few areas in between, areas perfectly designed to require the player to carefully avoid enemies instead of just running around the area entirely, and all of it is accessible by any method you want-vehicle, helicopter, or on foot. Enemies had meaningful patrol routes that took them all over the camp doing stuff that made sense in-universe but also required the player to be aware of their surroundings. It had tons of dialog conversations between NPCs, it had tons of collectables, it had areas of interest other than the objectives (ammo dumps, weapon drops, etc), it was a 10/10 world.

The only problem is that they tried to stuff in gameplay designed for the desolate empty wide open world of TPP so you get seen from way too far away and you pretty much can't use the sniper rifle and stay undetected, etc.

Gameplay is 10/10 its just a huge disappointment for fans of the story.

Since you havent played the others just know they used to be cinematic games, in fact they pioneered them. It was like playing a classic jrpg where half the game was cutscenes and plot. MGSv is pretty much 97% gameplay and 3 % plot by comparison
