I remember one from years ago that involved a candle, a gong, and a parrot. There was lots of string and I think the point was to be an alarm clock.

If you like Rube Goldberg machines, you may want to check out an old PC game called "The Incredible Machine" (assuming you don't already have it, of course). I played it like crazy back in the day. Probably free by now.
