I am going to propose two ideas for how I want this topic to go:

- this topic is strictly about hardcore punk, not punk music in general.
- Hardcore music, in this context, being whatever you think hardcore is.

So, with that said....HARDCORE PUNK MUSIC. I love hardcore punk because for me thats where it began. All the other things I love, for the most part, spread out as a result of it.

Hardcore doesn't mean a time or a place, but my favorite acts are the 1980s bands like Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Bad Religion and so on. Los Angeles, NYC and Washington, D.C., which I think is the region that has produced not only some of the best, but some of the most original and inventive music in the US.

Some of my favorite albums are:

Bad Brains 1982
Complete Discography(1989) by Minor Threat
Suffer(1988) by Bad Religion
Zen Arcade(1984) by Husker Du. This album is 23 tracks so it contains a hardcore album in a much larger package, but also because this album stretched hardcore to, and broke, its boundaries in 1984 while also getting more personal then almost all albums up to that point(making it a secret influence on emotional hardcore/emo)

Early Blag Flag is good, and other bands like the Germs are good as well. There's more, but I can't think at the moment. There's just too many bands to have listened to them all, though I could be more studious. I check out new music not nearly as often as the past, though I still do, and that will never fully go away. I never feel the need to listen to modern music specifically because its modern. Some people are like "You never hear real instruments in music any more" which, despite being a flat out lie, never concerned me. The entire catalog of recorded music exists at my fingertips via the internet. if guitars die tomorrow that'll never erase the past and the literal hundreds or thousands of bands i've not listened to.

So yeah, as I said, this is where it begins. You have bands take the hardcore approach and slow it down resulting in stuff like the descendents. you add in horns and a slight metal tinge and you get early mighty mighty bosstones, two bands i love. It really did, for me, start it all. The first band I ever "loved" was The Offspring. Without them I never get to where I am today, possibly. BUT music never got serious for me until I got to hardcore.

I gravitate more towards crust punk and metalcore/metallic hardcore. Never been a big punk guy, but add some elements of metal and it's some of my favorite music. Dystopia and Coalesce are probably my two favorite crust punk and metalcore(respectively) bands. Coalesce basically pioneered mathcore.

I'm embarrassed to say I haven't listened to much of what was listed in the OP. I listened to a bit yesterday and I'll check out some more today.

But yeah im kinda the reverse. I never got into too much metal, but when I do its generally thrash since thats like heavier punk anyways.

If you plan on listening to the stuff I listed above you can do any order but if you plan on listening to Zen Arcade by Husker Du, do it last, as its not a traditional punk album in a sense. its 23 tracks, nearly 80 minutes of music, but enough hardcore to form its own album is on the record, so it counts, even if it has elements of psychedelic, jazz, acoustic, piano, etc on it. Also a heavy, heavy influence into bands like Nirvana and grunge in general as well.

If theres some killer thrash albums or anything like it youd like to rec please do.

I don't like him. I've heard some of his music, but not much, but his entire life just seems shitty and stupid.

Its one thing to be wacky and crazy and have a weird show, its like another thing to get super fucked up and throw poop at people and look like an embarrassing moron. So, like the old punk adage of "life fast, die young" never struck a chord with me. I don't like normal, boring people. but at the same time i dont like the other extreme. people wallowing in their own filth, like a GG allin.

I view it kinda like bands and musicians who can't play their instruments well. In some cases it can work, like the band Cap'n Jazz, which featured a bunch of teenagers who all went on to do bigger things musicially. But that band had a certain charm to it and it worked. Show somebody who is a fan of the song Take on Me the Cap'n Jazz version for a bit of a refreshing and unusual musical take on a popular song. In general, however, if you can't play your instruments well, it isn't a good sign and something i wouldnt advertise. certainly not what i'd want to be known for.

edit: I am not trying to imply all musicians need to have the technical complexity as the dudes from Converge. But you still need to know how to play your instruments to a decent degree. which most recorded artists do.

This band coalesce has raised an interesting question I ask myself.

So, i've been listening to punk for so long yet rarely ventured into metal outside of a few bands.

Ive stumbled across some metal before, but never got super into it.

Coalesce is a very interesting band, at least based off of the album "0:12 seconds" It isn't totally metal if you ask me, but its close yet distinctly different, though it is noted there are hundreds of metal subgenres just like punk.

It makes me question why I never got in to metal much before, outside of a handful of bands. Like I treat it like okay a couple albums and songs i like but I know there's more.

So lets see. find me a genre, folks. I like hardcore punk. as mentioned the bands bad brains, minor threat, bad religion(early, for this purpose though i like most of their stuff old and new). I like technical complexity. It doesnt have to be, but at the same time I like it and I know metal offers it, so yeah. I like instrumentals.

What do we do? Give me some metal albums and i may or may not listen to them at some point.

This could be a real education right here folks. metal U

Do you have any issues with more "extreme" vocal styles? I've always assumed that was the main turn off for most people when it come to hardcore-influenced metal. Another one of my favorites is Catharsis who are labeled with a lot of genres including anarcho-punk, brutal hardcore, blackened hardcore, and crust. They have some awesome lyrics but good luck understanding the guy. Maybe you're already aware of them. Their whole discography is great, but here's an example:

GG was actually a really smart guy. I mean, he was obviously not quite right in the head, but most of his public persona was calculated to draw outrage. If you listen to the phone conversations that his manager taped (without GG's knowledge) that are on The Troubled Troubadour, he's very rational about his career, and even talks about tracking record sales and setting up tour dates. And he was at least a decent guitarist; nothing special, but he knew the chords and had a good sense of rhythm ("Rowdy Beer Drinkin' Night").

That said, here's one of the best opening tracks from a hardcore album ever: Black Flag, "Rise Above"

(side note: I used to be able to get almost exactly Greg's tone on this song with my shitty Epiphone strat copy and a Crate 15-watt amp with the distortion maxed).

Some of the things ive read about it point to one of two things:

a) the anti trump rhetoric isn't very nuanced or complex
b) people are just now discovering that bad religion is a highly political band with left wing leanings. After all, 2004s the empire strikes first was 100% anti bush, because...well lyrically and also because the band said so themselves.

Ok listening to the album, I don't know why Spotify kept throwing out Lose Your Head from the album. Because that legit sounds like bad religion dad rock style

The rest of the album is a lot more intense. It's not grabbing me like other albums have but I'm also not a teen listening to punk rock in the basement. This seems like less of a direct attack on Trump (I'd say more largely alt right, Republicans, centrists) vs their 2004 Empire of The State which was way way anti Bush

How this album could surprise anyone with the fact that BR is left leaning anti establishment just leaves me thinking they really haven't listened to the band before but hey they might have thought the crossbuster was cool

song of the day:

"In My Eyes" by Minor Threat.

This is a good example of early DC hardcore in two ways: the first being its really angry. The second is because it actually preaches values. to a degree not seen in a lot of punk at this time. Abstinence from alcohol was a big theme of their music. If you ask me, thats really interesting. I drink a little bit myself but I see people on a daily basis who have their lives ruined by alcohol, so I say preach, brother.

Examine these lyrics:

You tell me you like the taste
You just need an excuse
You tell me it calms your nerves
You just think it looks cool
You tell me you want to be different
You just change for the same
You tell me it's only natural
You just need the proof
Did you fucking get it?

See, I used to be "straight edge" back when i was in high school, though I never called it that, I just thought drinking and drug use was dumb. But, when I turned 21 I started drinking, realized it can be fun, and so on and so forth. Now i use weed a lot and I drink once in a while(never to get drunk, just a glass or two of something nice). Though I don't care about what others are doing, but it is true working in a liquor store I see people who's lived are ruined by alcohol. That is the kind of shit that worries me, but all I do is sell it.

Overall, I respect people who abstain from drugs and alcohol, though I myself do not. I guess people who are pushy about it are lame, but otherwise whatever.

I kinda think about Ian Mackaye, the guy who wrote most of the songs for Minor Threat. He never intended for his song lyrics, and indeed his song "straight edge" to start a movement or anything. He never felt like he was telling other people what to do, but rather he was just saying what he doesn't do, but I don't think he was the most intelligent at getting that part across. The song "Out of Step" originally had the lyrics "dont smoke/dont drink/at least I can fucking think" which some people didnt like, so after some debate with the studio engineer i think they reworked the song and thus the alternative version exists in which the lyrics are changed to "I dont smoke/I dont drink/ at least I can fucking think" as well as an interlude added that goes

"Listen
This is no set of rules
I'm not telling you what to do
All i'm saying, is i'm bringing up three things
That are like so important to the whole world
That i don't have to find much importance in
Because of these things, whether they're, whether they're fucking or whether it's playing golf
Because of that
I feel that..."

Song of the day(and youre free to post yours, too):

"Diane" by Husker Du(1984).

Husker du was a band who's biggest influence seems to be 60s pop, but they started out as a hardcore band from minneapolis. so...originally they were one of the fastest bands you could hear in the early 80s. Aptly titled, their first release was a live record called "land speed record". So, the album this appears on, "metal circus" is a fast hardcore album, but unlike their past works this is the album(though kinda short like an EP) where you can sense they might be going places.

This song marks a transition from hardcore, present on their next album, my favorite album of all time, "Zen Arcade" to the weirder side. This song has a creepy atmosphere about it. and, to top it off its about the rape and murder of a woman named, well, Diane. Apparently a true story, making it even better i think. the song. not the rape and murder.

Here's my song of the day. Vision of Disorder was a great NY hardcore band in the 90's. I'm pretty sure their album For the Bleeders was my first taste of hardcore/metalcore and what spawned my interest in hardcore when I was mainly listening to alt metal, rock, and rap. I feel they had a very distinctive 90's sound too, sometimes reminiscent of Nirvana.

I was wondering how long it would be before i decided to break the loose topicality around here. here it is, in explicit fashion.

so, i've been thinking about "emo" music recently, which brings me to an important album I feel would be highly worth a listen to anybody who takes rock music seriously on a deep level.

That is Diary by the band sunny day real estate.

I've always felt it was cool that a band formed in seattle, washington in the early 1990s didnt become a grunge band. Of course seattle doesnt just produce grunge bands but it feels like its from the same era sorta. Two of its members went on to appear in the Foo Fighters at the request of dave grohl himself in the first incarnation. Nate Mendel is still with the Foos however William Goldsmith, the drummer didnt even last one album. Dave Grohl, according to Goldsmith, had him perform 96 drum takes of one song. Ouch!

That is criminal because half the reason you listen to this album is the drumming. Songs like "seven" have neat drums. Goldsmith is a very competent drummer, he knows how to play exciting, lively drums yet also keeping a tight rhythm slowing it down. The entire band works as a cohesive unit to shit out an album that sounds very well produced with some decently technical instrumentation. I feel like grunge fans could like this but i dont know i never really took a deep listen into the grunge genre.

on diary, sunny day real estate manage to alternate between fast and frantic to slow and heartfelt. There is a nice interplay of the styles here, as it is one of the hallmarks of emo music from the 1990s. Fast and slow, or sometimes, my favorite, one tempo then with about 30 seconds to a minute left it kicks it up a notch and the increased speed and volume drive it home. Though this album is slow than most, songs like "seven" and "shadows" kick up the pace.

This is an album that will make you happy because of the awesome musicianship but sad because of the vocals and lyrics. I mean, just off the top of my head one lyrics goes "You're married to your pain"

Like, ouch.

hey, check it out!

Reminds me of the Smashing Pumpkins lyric that went "I'm in love with my sadness." I've always known about that band but couldn't name a single song. I listened to a bit of Diary and, maybe I'm off base here, but it kind of reminded me of a Scottish band I used to listen to called Aereogramme. I'm not hating it so far.
