I'm on season 4 now and I thought he was completely in the right for killing Tywin and Shae. in the former case it was a matter of covering his escape/Jaime and in the latter it was a case of self-defense.

It's crazy how morally upright he and Jon have been up to this point

iirc, the show white washes his character, leaving out a lot of his dark thoughts and justifying his actions

Yeah, the Shae attacking him first bit was an invention of the show. In the book he saw her and just lost it.

"Dany didn't react when her brother was murdered, that was foreshadowing of her being crazy."

"Tyrion murdered his lover and his father, but he's still a pretty good guy."

That being said, he really hasn't done anything to justify this strange regret he seems to harbor that is causing him to want to be this weirdo fucking pacifist to everyone he hates. I'd maybe understand if they portrayed him more like in the books, but I don't think book Tyrion would give a shit either.

Not really.

He is far more grey in the books. Probably an Anti-Hero until he has some major sanity slippage after his Trial and killing Tywin/Shaw. He tried to do a good job ruling as hand, and does some kind things like that special saddle he made for Bran.

But he can be quite cruel and a giant prick sometimes even before the Trial. Mostly to giant pricks who really should be executed for their crimes anyways but he does have moments where he Kicks the Dog.

Albeit his cruelty mostly comes from general mistreatement and self loathing/alcoholism related to his abusive family but yeah he has plenty of moments where he could be the bigger man(hehe) or takes his misery out on someone weaker who didnt deserve it.

Tywin absolutely 100% deserved it though.

Killing someone to cover your escape is not justified. That's clearly a murder of convenience. Sure the alternative sucks for you, but that doesn't make the moral weight of such a decision go away.

She called him "my giant of a Lannister" which everyone laughed about at the trial, and that made him snap. Still yeah, much more dark in the book. Shae was much different in the books too.

Man that whole sequence was a million times better in the book.

Killing an Man like Tywin who has greenlit countless atrocities and been a horrifically emotionally abusive father seems fair to me.

Shae less so.

It wasnt even to cover his escape. He went out of his way to find Tywin who was taking a shit.

Oh, so revenge then?

Definitely revenge.

In the novel Tyrion learned the truth about his wife, Tysha, and how she genuinely loved him. Tywin had lied to him, saying that Tysha was a whore Jaime had hired to teach Tyrion a lesson. Tywin had his men then take turns fucking Tysha while Tyrion watched, making Tyrion go last.

The story about her being a whore was a lie. Tysha actually loved Tyrion, and Tywin fabricated the story about her being a whore because he couldnt stand the idea of someone loving Tyrion and him being happy. This revelation is what pushed Tyrion over the edge.

In the show he was just mad because Tywin sentenced him for Joffreys death. They dropped the Tysha plot entirely despite setting it up in an earlier episode.

That backstory is still there in the show. Only she wasn't his wife (though I think they might have been engaged), and Jamie wasn't involved.

And it was never brought up again after it was first mentioned and the truth was never revealed. In the show it had nothing to do with with why Tyrion killed Tywin.

Yes. Against a cruel man and even crueler father. Tywin had it coming.

That story is used to show us how hopeless that relationship is and the depths of Tywin's hatred for his son. The themes that story explores are very much at the heart of why that murder plays out the way it does.

And for the record, I'm not saying Tywin didn't deserve. I'm saying the act of murder for convenience or revenge are both inherently evil, and that Tyrion has committed at least one of these things.

I've not read the books at all and stopped watching the show when we started burning children for shock value. But I remember this conversation happening somewhere in this show.

Found it. Episode 8. Even I'm remembering a bit of this incorrectly.

I dont think youre following me here. Yes, I know they discussed it in season 1. I mentioned that earlier.

What Im criticizing is that the reveal about the truth of those events was completely left out. Tysha is one of Tyrions driving motivations in the novels. In the show its brought up one time and then promptly dropped.

He knew Tywin would realize Jaime helped him though. He was already an embarrassment for losing his hand and this would've made it worse.

Plus, Tywin still totally deserved it. It was a selfish act, but it probably did just as much good as it did bad, at least in the short term.
