For most of us all they can do is cause some discomfort for a period of time, but that doesn't stop them from completely controlling our goddamn lives when they get too close.

A 200lb human running away from a creature so small that its weight doesn't even register on any normal scale.

There's a valuable life lesson in here somewhere, maybe about the power in being perceived as a crazy bastard...

The only time someone runs from a wasp is if they're allergic or they're getting something to kill it.

So many of the flying stinger insects that aren't like.. a straight-up bumblebee are total dicks. Aggressive as hell, get right up in your shit, etc. It's annoying as hell, especially if you're trying to have a meal outside.

Pain is subjective. A wasp sting is slightly more irritating than a mosquito's to me. A migraine and toothache are things I'd describe as "really fucking hurts"

Well rotten food can make you very sick or worse, whereas a wasp sting is probably just going to hurt a bit

It's not the sting of a wasp that really scares me, its the hideous way they move and sound.

Wasps I can deal with since they're usually on their own and large enough to keep an eye on. What gets me are the yellow jackets. They're so small that you usually don't notice them until they're stinging you. Three summers in a row I ran over their underground nests while mowing the lawn. The second time one crawled in my ear and gave me a bite. The thing swole up for a week. Looked like I was wearing a rubber ear.

Most people aren't such dorks that they keep track of win/loss ratios for everything in their lives and treasure them above all else.

Most people really don't care if they can kill the wasp and be smug about it, just that it can sting them and it will hurt.

They sting instead of biting.

There really aren't a lot of flying insects that bite.

What point? A cantalope poses no downside to people not allergic to it. A wasp is still a potential sting to people who aren't allergic to it.

Most people would do their best to avoid a beesting if they can.

The user seemed to think that because it could kill his relative due to an allergy, the premise of this topic is false. I demonstrate and equivalent case that is unoquivocally ridicuous to demonstrate that it was faulty logic. There's absolutely no reason why I should need to be so verbose about it.

On the actual topic, wasp stings aren't that painful and go away relatively quickly. The extent to which people fear them is a bit disproportionate (like if a wasp flies into the office in the summertime, you get essentually an evacuation until it leaves lol)

Its the distinct coloration and rapid erratic movements.

It basically forces me to notice it but can be difficult to actually track and predict it.

Plus they sometimes make nests undeground so its easy to miss em and suddenly bring a hoard of em down on your head just from doing stuff in your yard.

I've had some awful bee stings, they hurt for a while then swell up and itch. If you have reactions like this, you're going to be miserable for a day, then uncomfortable for a few days. But I've had some wasp stings that weren't that bad...not sure what the difference is.

Still, I don't freak out when they come near me. That just makes them more likely to sting you.

You know what scares the shit out of me? Water bugs

I had no idea those things could fly, they hang around light posts at night. One flew on my neck when I was a kid, I thought it was a cockroach and tried to swat it off. It immediately bit into my neck and it felt like a cold ice pick was jammed into me. They bite hard as fuck and there isn't that much skin layer on your neck to begin with. I never screamed so loud from a sting or bite from anything.

Of course we would win in a fist fight.

Seriously think it through. Imagine if you actually tried to fight a wasp.

Here's what would happen:

1. Wasps stings you, this hurts a bit but does no actual damage
2. You fucking crush it into paste effortlessly
