In the show there was no point.

thats another thing to add to the list to the reasons this season sucks

build that shit for 7 seasons and it was completely pointless

they were supposed to be the real menace of the story, and the final boss. but the show decided to change that. we should have killed Cersei off at the end of last season maybe. and then dealt with white walkers all this season. or.....have the white walkers kill her. one theory I liked was having Cersei try to ally with the Night King and then he kills her

to unite and bring all the Good Guys in one place and to weaken the army of the Good Guys so that Bad Guy (cersei) can stand a chance against Good Guy (dany)

or at least that's what people told me on here when I was bitching about how D&D made the Walker arc pointless

where are those people now I wanna hear their brain gymnastics

Yeah I feel like white walkers were the key to making sure the series didn't end the way it seems like it's going to. They should have been relevant up to the very last episode.

The entire show should have led to the humans being unable to make peace with each other and succumbing to the real overarching threat. Dany and Cersei fight each other, humanity is fractured, they simply aren't prepared for the army of the dead and they lose.

Instead we get Arya teleporting behind the NK and deleting them in one episode and forgotten about by the next. 10 years of buildup down the fucking drain.

I don't think she ever really thought much of them. she didn't believe they were a threat. even when one was brought to her throne room, she dismissed it. she just didn't get it. and then the good guys made sure she didn't have to ever worry about it.

The night king was created by the children of the forest to combat the first men. It wasn't until their weapon got out of hand that they banded together to drive them back and create the wall. Centuries and centuries pass and people forget the threat always lurked beyond.

They have no purpose. They just have a base instinctual drive to kill living things. The Wall was pretty much fool proof, but the events that conspired led them to acquire an undead dragon to break down the wall and become somewhat of a threat again.

The characters in the show/book aren't omniscient. In hindsight, if they left affairs alone north of the wall, nothing would have happened (except for the genocide of the wildlings). In the moment, it looked like a supernatural force of evil. In hindsight, it was a formidable, but beatable "boogeyman."

Idk, it's probably some loose allegory to the dangers of climate change. Or maybe cold war era foreign policy in the middle east. Who knows.

So I kind of fell off of this series and don't care if anything is spoiled for me... can someone answer me a question...

I think season 4 was the last one I watched... and around then, I predicted that at some point, bran would use his 'mind control' powers (or whatever they are) to take over and control a dragon... did he ever end up doing that? Or maybe a white walker, or the leader of the white walkers?

Nope. In the climax of the white walker conflict he controlled a raven for no reason, and we don't even know why, during the whole battle, while being bait for the leader of the white walkers

Though I haven't read up on anything happening in this current season, it's sad (though understandable) to hear about the nose dive this show has taken in terms of plot/writing.

Who said they were supposed to be the real menace? The book doesnt even have a Night King. GRRM even said he doesnt see them as the antagonist so where are you getting those details.

I always thought one of the biggest complaints about GoT was how political and dramatizing the show was for having a medieval and crusaders atmosphere. Throwing in White Walkers all into the mix suddenly made the show LotR almost with now a huge fantasy aspect to it.

From watching the show from season 1

The very first thing we ever see in the story is white walkers

If Martin doesn't intend them to be the true enemy he sucks at conveying that. Cause the story from season 1 to now made me think they were

yeah, which is dumb.

she played them off as being irrelevant, and then they were, despite jon's constant bitching and moaning to everyone for seasons

It was hilarious how the week of that episode people were all "The white walkers whipped out most of the army! How will Jon and Dany win now?" And then immediately in the following episode we hear that they now have an equal army to Cersei lol

I don't think the White Walkers are going to be mentioned again.

They almost killed humanity and all of their armies so...they were a huge threat. Jon had to prepare everyone and they still all basically died if not for Arya happening upon some faceless man training and Bran giving her the dagger.

Dont get me wrong, the lore/mythology explanation of the WW and Raven was weak as FUCK

But anyone who thought they were gonna be the big bad of a series written by this dude is severely unfamiliar with this dude. The point is that the apocalypse event wasnt fantasy ice zombies, it was ourselves. The ice zombies still deserved more background on the way, mind you, but still.

We lost half our army!

...seriously? Half? Why the fuck werent they in the fight? Winter fell got trounced. Im thinking like 90% casualty rate. That would have added some oh shit we are boned.

And we lost Dolores Ed! And Jorah! And... Beric!

If it had been up to me I would have listed every single named character in a whiteboard. Everyone form Dany, Jon, and their dragons all the way down to Gilly and her baby. Thered probably be sixty names up there.

Then Id flip a coin for each one. Heads they live, tails they die. Of the ones who died, they get another coin flip. Heads its in some meaningful way, like sacrificing themselves or dealing a large blow against a giant or something. If its tails, they just get ganked. No fanfare, no close-ups, just blegh. Falls out of the shot dead.

We should have been horrified by what we saw. We were not.

I remember when the white walkers were a huge threat to Westeros, and potentially the world. All the people back then could do was push them back and build the wall.

All they needed back then was Ninja Khajiit Girl with 100 in Sneak.

Personally, I dont really mind that an assassin was the answer its an interesting and unconventional but logical way to deal with a cliche Dark Lord and his minions but her leaping from fucking nowhere was absurd
