In this hypothetical, you will work a total of 2,000 hours per year picking fruit in the Arizona desert. The specifics will be determined by the industry standards and will involve more work in some seasons than others. The job comes with no benefits and the wages are fully taxable.

How much would you need to be paid to accept?

It's tough to separate the question from the context of my actual life.

Like, for me personally, it would need to be a lot higher than whatever the labor is probably actually worth. Because it would mean quitting my current career and moving a thousand miles away where I know nobody and etc.

And I don't know enough about that current market in the Arizona desert to have an informed opinion on what the labor should truly be worth.

He made a speech saying that we need illegal immigrants because Americans won't pick fruit. To demonstrate this he rhetorically offered the crowd $50/hour to pick fruit in Arizona, and said he was sure they would turn down the offer.

I'd have to make what I'm making now, which is more than the going rate for laborers. I've got financial obligations.

Let's see...
$50 an hour, 100k a year to work an average of 10 hours for 200 days.

This isn't including insurance, retirement plans, or anything. I might be willing to do that for a year or two but that's it. For a low skill job that's pretty amazing but damage will accumulate if you don't get out.

2000 hours with no benefits, high physical risk, and no career advancement??

i'd probably need in the range of 400k to 500k to do it

Seems like most people here aren't desperate enough to do it for anything close to what that job is paying in the market.

You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

if it helps anyone make the decision, I know from living in phoenix that they try to avoid the hotter parts of the day when doing this work, meaning you would be working odd hours but the heat... instead of being up to 120 degrees+ in the peak summer time will only be a mere up to 100 degrees or so.

No he wasn't
YOU won't agree to do this, but other Americans would
There are so many jobs in the world that I just wonder why the fuck would anyone be willing to work in them, hell, even some jobs that are "fun" like being stuck in a costume doing "meet and greet" in Disney Land
Some people need the money
Some people want a brain-dead job, even if it's very physical

Yeah. This is what I was getting at in my first post.

There are tons of people who make less than $50/hr who wouldn't consider the job even for a minute, given all the conditions. But if you posted that job with that pay, I assure you the positions would be filled quickly.

What are the conditions? Using your arms? Picking fruit is a physical labor job sure. So is framing a house. It's not ungodly difficult.

For $50 leaving behind a career making less isnt some sort of horrible thing

I never said it was horrible? I'm just not inclined to do it. I'm happy where I live, I like my career, I have benefits...I mean I could keep listing reasons that I'm happy but I feel it's not necessary. It would take more than waving a wad of cash in my face to convince me to uproot my life to do something I don't give a damn about.
