My college Japanese teacher hated that movie and once went on a rant in class about it

If I remember right, in the real story the guy was British not American. Also I think he never actually did any fighting and was not a warrior. Samurai was also used as just a Title of nobility. I don't think he ever did battle.

Titanic isn't that important to history in the grand scheme of things. Braveheart is definitely up there. Completely bullshits an entire nation's history.

Braveheart, and Inglorious Bastards rank pretty high up there, pretty sure "Kingdom of Heaven" is another big offender.

Pocahontas.

And just to be clear, Tom Cruise in Last Samurai is based on Jules Brunet

The "white dude winds up as second in command of Japanese forces during a civil war and is one of the few survivors" is completely true.

There's far more significant problems. The Last Samurai gets nearly everything wrong about the samurai in the Meiji period. The film romanticizes the samurai to hell and back. And then makes them seem like they're fighting an evil, Western backed, and modern state. The samurai in reality were facing a class struggle. It was about maintaining their status as a warrior aristocracy, and keep their privileges--not about tradition vs. modernity.

Yep the Samurai were the old warrior aristocracy fighting to maintain their top position in society. The Meiji regime brought the reform and modernization needed that eventually made Japan top dog in East Asia for nearly a century.

The samurai did not want to lose their status, lands, and wealth is the real truth, yes a lot of them were only trying to maintain the top position in society as they were accustom to their lifestyle.

Disney's Pocahontas is basically complete fiction apart from Pocahontas and John Smith existing.

Her real name isn't even Pocahontas.

The thing is, the movie doesn't purport to be a historical film, so I'd give it a pass. Same with Inglorious Basterds.

Red Tails, the "first ever action movie with an all black cast" as claimed by George Lucas. The captain of the segregated flight group was denied entry to an officer's club because of race. His critics fabricated a lie that he attacked started a riot. The truth is that he simply walked around the guy like in Office Space, but then he got attacked and dozens of his group were arrested. No one was exonerated until 1995.

But in George Lucas's movie "Lighting" can't contain his emotions and he commits assault, fast as lighting.
