You couldn't have cashed it as it would have been made out to her. You could have destroyed it as another mentioned, but she could have put a stop payment on it and been reimbursed.

I applaud him for doing so, but in the end she would have not lost the money.

I think the point the article was trying to make was she had 500k+ and didn't want to spare a couple dollars to tip or something like that.

A cashier's check is a money order. That shit is as good as gone once it's sent. It can't be stopped. The only thing you get is a receipt that will tell you whether or not it was cashed.

A cashiers check and money order are two different items. A cashiers check means that it was made out to someone specifically. A money order is where the payee can be left blank until it is handwritten in. Thats why money orders are typically capped off at a maximum amount, in case its lost because as you pointed out its as good as cash.

True, but at this point the only person who would be able to cash it would be the person the check is made out to, which wouldnt be such a bad thing since it was intended for them in the first place. In worst case, wait the three months, explain the situation to the person who was intended to have the check, and then make out a new check. My point being that some random person who found it would not be able to cash it because it would not be made out to them.

Because the ATM would stop you. No financial institution is going to let you cash such a large check amount through an ATM. I mean what if I just took a blank check, made it out for a million bucks and took it to an ATM? Its because of fraudulent items financial institutions typically dont like to lose money.

Second reason is an ATM is not going to contain 500k.

A check of that amount is going to be put on hold and checked by an actual person who would see the name doesnt match. Also, mobile deposits have limits, you cant deposit a 500k via mobile deposit. Doubt through an ATM either.

I appreciate your tenacity though .
