I was at a book store the other day and near the checkout line there were these little Disney figures. However they came in a closed box so you wouldn't know what you were buying. And on the back they had the odds for each character. For like Chip and Dale it was a 1/6 chance of getting them. For Gadget it was like a 1/36 chance to get it and so on.

So if someone wanted to get collection of Rescue Rangers they would have to keep buying these things over and over until they got the character that they wanted.. That is pretty messed up for an official product .

Wow. Gadget gets merchandise and it's a loot crate character with a 1 in 36 chance of being in the box. That's crazy.

It was odd because her another girl character some duck lady both had low odds of winning and I felt that was kind of crappy since a little girl might want to play with a girl character.

I don't remember a duck from Rescue Rangers. Maybe it was Magica De Spell from Duck Tales? Either way, if there are only two female characters and they both have low odds, that is pretty lame. I have a feeling that at least 50-60% of the people who buy this are gonna be female.

my peak childhood was during the pokemon/yugioh card era so while I can remember the fortune collectively everyone in our neighborhood spent on that I cant imagine he earlier era where people actually cared about baseball cards and the such....what was the appeal? you couldn't battle them (?) all you could do was trade them

After all, a lot of lootboxes take on a "card pack" aesthetic.

Let's still not ignore the fact that the success of video game lootboxes is probably making the idea more desirable to merchandisers, regardless of where the basic concept started.

It's better than loot boxes because loot boxes dont disclose the odds.

I'm not really a merchandise guy, but I got burned some years back when I bought a blind box Mickey Mouse souvenir from Disney World. I got one which resembled Goofy from the How to Swim short. It looked stupid as fuck; especially compared to something like the Space Mountain Mickey which had a starry design to it.

I couldn't bring myself to throw it away because I'd spent my money on it. So it sat there and looked at me with this shit-eating grin as if to say, "Ha ha, mother fucker. You spent your money on me and you can't get it back."

Then my sister's dog destroyed it and I was greatly pleased.
