looking to watch some speedruns. i've tuned in once in a while to gdq stuff.

my favorite is still the F-Zero GX one from like 2015? i think

but yeah. would prefer runs with some explanations within (so primarily gdq stuff i guess...) since there's a good chance i won't know what is going on.

Wait like a week for GDQ to start.

I always like the Ninja Gaiden relay race from 2015
Actually there were quite a few from 2015...that was a good AGDQ

uhh I don't have a super great memory for gdq highlights but to name a few off the top of my head, pokemon blue catch em all for glitch shenanigans, pretty much anything from the awful blocks for humor (most notably arabian nights from the latest one), co-op majora's mask and the old paper mario ttyd one if you want something really long to put on in the background

as far as commentated non-gdq stuff goes, the 2-pause majora's mask and 3-pause 100% ocarina of time runs (and to a lesser extent the other gimmick runs by the same authors) are really neat! familiarity with the games helps but isn't completely required I think, I understood them well enough having played a bit and seen some runs but not actually finished the games myself

Also Kirby Planet Robobot - Meta Knightmare Returns mode.

I really like the World Record Progression videos because they give me a deeper appreciation for certain runs and the history behind games I don't keep tabs on.

If you are into to Zelda games, a lot of the top runners are grinding right now, and anyone will explain stuff is you ask.

EDIT: like Ocarina of Time 100% WR holder, ZFG, is on the last stretch of his 3:52 grind, or Popesquidward, who is trying to the Majora"s Mask any% WR before his run at this AGDQ

I'm looking forward to the runs by PJ this coming gdq, Actraiser 2 for just impressive technique, and Mohawk... well, because I like hearing everyone realize that mistakes were made. (Mohawk was the longest rejected speedrun, until this gdq.) But it's pretty easy to wait and start at the 6th for all the runs coming.

yeah this series is kind of what put me in the mood. the runs i was most receptive to were obviously the games i was already somewhat familiar with so knowing the context about other games helps immensely. i guess i'm not really looking for runs with the fastest speed as much as i am looking for exhibitions within runs that show off all the cool stuff of games that casuals would never know about.

these are still my favs so far:

2014 F-Zero GX Very Hard - CGN

oh i didn't even see the pokemon one was already mentioned.

if you're listing titles, are there any specific runs you would recommend?

IF youd like to see a speedrun for a game that youve never seen before but has pretty cool tech, a few suggestions:

Gimmick! (has been run multiple GDQs, no particular run is better or worse that I recall)
Umihara Kawase (any% is maybe too short to realize whats going on, so go for the run from 2018)
Donald Land

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/288840392 is the current record run. iirc it's super light on actual tutorial discussion/trick explanations/etc, but there's really not that much in the way of actual tricks for the run. And anything there actually is, is basically just "X happened at the same time as Y, well-coded game can't handle it properly."
