I feel it isn't mentally healthy to have such interest but between discouraging/purging it and at least having said outlet where no one real is actually harm, I'm honestly am not sure which is the more practical of the two.

That being said, would it be fair to suggest that if some folks are into violent video games but in real life would never succumb to carrying out the real thing, that the same might apply to folks interested in fictional children but would never carry out the real thing? Might this actually be an apples to apples situation or still apples and oranges?

I've seen a few of those and they usually have much more to the story than what's on the surface. Some are found to have actual CP and charged for that, some enter plea deals because they don't want to deal with a long court battle and some are immediately dismissed. It differs case by case and on which country.
The most recent one I can think of was that melonpan incident and he eventually got all his confiscated stuff back and his case dismissed.

Just as I don't believe violent video games make people more likely to commit violent acts, I don't believe this makes a pedophile more likely to act on their criminal person.

I don't think pedophilia is treatable, it would be like trying to treat someone with a foot fetish.

Let them have this as an outlet and make sure they get looked down on for deviancy.

But I'm really okay with that. It disgusts me personally, but hey. If a person is attracted to kids, I'd much rather they get off on loli hentai than real child porn.
