Erm, no. Excellent game, but...

- too one-note in tonal variety. Consistency is good and a game doesn't have to be as off-the-wall as SotN to be fun, but Super Metroid had very well-defined shifts between zones in terms of music, art style, and vibe. Hollow Knight has somber dark tunnels, somber dark mossy cave, somber dark rainy city, etc.

- past the halfway point of the game, the devs got in the bad habit of taking the sadism of their boss fights and platforming challenges one step past the point of enjoyability, to the point where I lost interest in finishing the game right at the end because I simply didn't have any patience left for it.

- people have complained for years about metroidvania games hiding cool shit behind nondescript breakable walls. Hollow Knight doubles down majorly on this, hiding things far more unique than missile tanks behind thoroughly unremarkable walls.

There's definitely an argument to be made for that (as Hollow Knight is fantastic), but I personally don't agree.

Firstly, I find Hollow Knight's abilities to be rather basic (although I feel the same to be the case for Castlevania), and there aren't that many of them. Metroid, on the other hand, has quite a few weird and wonderful power-ups: the Morph Ball (and its many functions like the Spider Ball and Boost Ball), Screw Attack, Ice Beam, X-ray Visor, etc.

Secondly, Hollow Knight doesn't allow much deviation from the intended path (I mostly mean in terms of the key power-ups). Not all Metroid games do that either, but Super and Prime certainly do (often unintentionally through glitches, but it's all the same), adding plenty of reply value and room for experimentation.

I think we all probably have different ideas about what makes a good Metroidvania. The above two aspects are a big deal for me (more generally, the power-ups and (open-ended) level design).

Also, anyone played the new Wonder Boy? I hear it's great.

I would love to try this game on the Switch but Im still waiting for a sale.

I will say that I believe that Hollow Knight is the archetypical modern example of this genre, and I feel that anyone who enjoys said genre would be doing themselves a massive disservice to pass on it.

And really, as a game that builds on its predecessors, I can say pretty easily that it outpaces their faults, simply by the nature of it being able to recognize and build upon them.

My favorite parts in Hollow Knight is when after you're stuck having to deal with this annoying character you get to kill their mom and they know they can't do anything about it and when you find out that one of the most pleasant and visually interesting characters is wearing a big chastity belt to avoid fucking the world to death.

At the end of the day, I cared far more about the story and characters in Hollow Knight compared with every other Metroid-Vania ever made.

I would have it tied with SOTN actually.
