The fact that it's like 50 years old is mind boggling. Kubrick was a visionary. The camera work and story are both amazing.

For example the camera work when the astronauts are walking on the moon to the monolith was amazing. And coupled with the Gregorian music in the background...my God. So spooky and intense and beautiful and mindblowingly wondrous all at the same time.

In my top 5 favorite films right now tbqh.

This. The story is nonexistent almost and while it would be impressive back then, it's not really great no matter how many times they restore it to modern technology lol.

Fun fact, the book they want to go to saturn.

Kubrick changed it to jupiter.

The monoliths are said to be related to saturn's cube.

This is the charm though. It isn't a dude mowing down aliens with a gatling gun.
It is a dude doing normal things, having a normal day in space until the psycedelic trip.

It wasn't a psychedelic trip. When he gets to Jupiter he encounters the highly advanced aliens that the monolith signaled when it was uncovered on the moon. And they took him in and put him into a type of simulation where they could study him and see what he's like. That's what the room was where he was in at the end.

And as a reward they turned him into one of them, which explains the ending when the baby-like being in space was approaching earth.

it's brilliantly shot and i love the concepts. i don't think it's an entertaining film though, but it did bring some exciting ideas about space travel, AI and humanity. plus they p much knew what the earth would look like from space, the film was done before the infamous earthrise photo

i got the 4K blu ray of it and the lighting/colour is awesome, especially in the red room
