For the past 30 years, Davis, a black man, has spent time befriending members of the Ku Klux Klan.

He says once the friendship blossoms, the Klansmen realize that their hate may be misguided.

Lets see 2 different extreme examples.

1. A guy says the n word. He apologizes and vows to never ever say it again.
Is he still a racist?

2. A literal KKK man befriends a black man who convinces him that racism is stupid and evil and he gives up being KKK.
Is he still racist?

Can either man do anything to no longer be racist?
Is it possible?

They could be internally racist but act not racist. Closeted racists for example

By that logic the whole world could be closeted racists who just act not racist, minus those who do indeed act it.

So is your answer then, that inside these men are still racists, but just no longer act racist?

Can they never stop being internally racist?

I don't think it's possible for someone raised and socialized in society over the last 100 years to completely overcome internalized biases like that.

it might be possible at some point in the distant future, but that's purely hypothetical.

Not in my eyes they aren't.

But I only hold such a view because I can't read people's minds and beliefs and such. If they seem earnest in their change and treat others well enough, then I really can't bill them as a racist. Not completely anyway.

I do think that, for the purpose of this conversation, there should be some distinction between "racist" (adjective) and "racist" (noun)

the former refers to the societal system and the biases and values it imposes on the people who live in such a society; the latter refers to a person who embraces the values imposed on them by the system. someone can be racist (adjective) without being a racist (noun)
