When played by the original rules, it actually doesn't take that long (2 hours, roughly). Most people just home-rule it by adding the free-parking thing, and allowing properties to go un-purchased (When a spot is landed on, if the original person doesn't want it, it is supposed to automatically go to auction)

The main problem is, people have a fundamental misunderstanding of the game. it's an elimination game. players are supposed to lose along the way. but families want to play the game together, and having to watch isn't "fun", so they gimmick up a way to keep everyone playing. which then prevents the game from ever actually ending by anything other than group concession.

This. When played properly the game actually goes quite fast. For some reason it seems like everyone ignores the important rules like auctioning off properties and free parking being just free parking and not a bunch of free cash. Not only that but people will hold on to useless properties which accomplishes nothing but making the game take longer, when instead they could have sold / traded for something they need.

after hearing people say this so much (and having done these rules for monopoly as a kid) I tried it playing with the proper rules a few years ago with my cousins and.... the game was just as slow and endless as it always was. Well, maybe it would have ended sooner, but in both cases it didn't end until we just gave up on it and decided to stop

the free parking thing is definitely sometihng that keeps money high, but in practice the auction thing never gets used at all since no one ever lands on a property unable or unwilling to buy it

Monopoly is the most realistic game I ever played.

You're playing what are ostensibly extremely rich business mogul tycoons that just randomly buy property.
You get a "Get Out of Jail Free" card
Even if you don't get the card, your maximum sentence is only a few turns at most
You almost never pay any taxes
When there's a bank error in your favor, you aren't fined anything for spending the money
You squirm in glee while in the lead counting your stacks of cash as everyone else (the losers) dwindles down to nothing and go broke
Pretty much whether you succeed or not is entirely up to chance

The problem, beyond just house rules, is people don't play it aggressively. That's what extends the game. People horde property and money, because they think "getting rich and owning a lot" is how it should be played. You're supposed to buy, trade, and sell in order to eliminate the competition as ruthlessly as possible.

That's when the game is at its fastest and most fun.
