As others have said, it's pretty inappropriate for her to be asking that of you. Unless there's more details you could further elaborate on to help better set the scene/relationship/company.

She's obviously not really your friend if she expects you to bend over backwards for something that has nothing to do with you. It's her own problem.

This. A real friend would never ask you to do something like that. Honestly, a real friend would tell you not to do it even if you offered unsolicited. To go so far as to ask you to it? She sounds like a bad person tbqh.

Tell her that you're sympathetic that things didn't work out for her, but that she made a choice to change positions, you feel you earned your current position, and you should not be expected to step down due to the company restructuring. She took a risk and got burned. It sucks, but it's not your responsibility to accommodate her.

This is her problem not yours. Its selfish of her to even ask you to resign for her. You don't owe her anything. Also you should worry about your success not hers.

I agree, but

Could she try to spin this as a sexual harassment case? We did date a while back.

That doesnt make sense to me. Even if it somehow bordered on ethics (which it doesnt), how could she possibly make this about sexual harassment? Thats ridiculous.

Tell her you took on debt that requires the job position and if she can demote you with same pay, you'll do it. That way the bank and your company is the asshole and not you.

But that's some serious gall on her part to ask you directly. I'd feel bad for her cause she got screwed, but it's ultimately not your business

Force her to escalate the situation if you have suspicions, you might want to consult a lawyer if you think it's likely she will go there. But don't quit.
