Zero Mission is already basically Super Metroid in terms of gameplay.

They should remake Super Metroid as Samus Returns style.

They would "fix" various sequence breaks and glitches (which would be a shame, as they're a big part of the game for many people, myself included). It's not really avoidable in some cases, as they're part of Super's engine.

As for what I'd want them to change/add:

- Better graphics obviously (my preference would be Fusion style pixel art, but they'd go with something more modern, which could also work)
- Show doors on the map
- Diagonal aiming without L/R, the ability to use missiles / super missiles / power bombs without toggling and whatever other control features the newer games have (maybe allow the old and new ways to please fans of both). Maybe an always run option
- An in-built randomizer and/or speedrun mode
- A little extra content
- Also, get rid of that last save point (or allow you to return)!

The only thing I can think of that needs to be improved on is the controls. There are too many buttons that do too little. Two separate buttons to aim up or down, a button to cancel weapon selection, a manual run button, for example.

MZM added a shitton of sequence breaks, to the point that there really isn't much of a sequence anymore, unless you strictly follow the guide-markers.

There is nothing they could fix that would justify them butchering something that made the game great

Metroid 1 and 2 had glaring flaws that justified the remakes. I would much rather a new game with Super Metroid quality be made than them retreading (and trampling) old ground on something thats so difficult to improve

MZM also added new parts to the map that weren't there before. Metroid didn't really have a sequence apart from you needed to beat both Kraid and Ridley before fighting Mother Brain.

There were small sequences like you needed morph ball to progress beyond the first few screens and bombs to access mostly everything else, but after that the game was pretty much open to you. A few paths became available by jumping on frozen enemies but those were generally optional places.

There was a "sequence", just very vague, and mostly dependent on bombs.

MZM is a great example of rolling that sort of "find it your damn self" design theory into a modern "go here now" design.

A Zero Mission-style remake wouldn't be a substantial enough change. It already looks 16-bit. If anything, Samus Returns would be what they'd realistically go for.

I'd like for them to add:
- Free aim like in Samus Returns. Not sure about the whole parry system coming back, unless they make it more optional. (it kinda was, but it made the game harder if you didn't use it)
- Change the map system to show when items are acquired or not.
- Change the wall jump system to how it is in Metroid Zero Mission.
- A few added bosses. They don't have to be required, just surprise sub-bosses of the likes of that snake dragon thing or Crocomire.
- An added area or two, again to accomodate the new bosses and possibly new powerups.

Other than that it's kinda fine the way it is. I don't want them to change it and force a linear path, the fact you could sequence break it so hard and not break the game (so to speak) was amazing and I want to keep that. Also yeah, I'd want them to go for a 2.5D remake like Samus Returns. Needs to be on the Switch though so they can focus on much prettier environments.

Nothing is wrong with the graphics. Super Metroid is as pretty as they come.

this is pretty much the only thing to fix.

if they remade it then they'd probably add another area and some bosses to the game. maybe have it like zero mission where there's a whole new post game you play as zero suit.

it's a game that doesn't really need fixing so less is more unless it's just adding extra content to it without changing to much to the game. which is why i think a zero suit add on to the post game is the way to go.

ZM's wall jump was both optional and easier to pull off with good timing, SM's wall jumps is beyond wonky
