My faith in the Harry Potter movie franchise died when they removed Voldemort's entire backstory from Half Blood Prince. At that point I was just like...why did you even bother making this movie?

They're alright. The first 2 are better adaptations because the books were short enough that they didn't have to leave things out.

Beyond that, major amounts of backstory & character development were dropped.

they're not good movies, but they're pretty entertaining
the first two are made by the same guy, they're pretty solid adaptions and set the stage for magic and wonder
the third is the only legitimately good movie out of the bunch, but it is hurt because of time travel
the fourth is terrible and made worse by the fact you can't skip it since it sets the stage for the next half of the franchise
the fifth through the eighth are made by the same guy. everything gets darker and washed out, they also begin making fights a bunch of lights and no one says spells anymore. they're serviceable movies though

in all i'd say they're not the worst thing to watch and for some reason they make me think of Christmas, but don't feel like you're missing out if you haven't seen them
