This. 4 is the perfect standard. If a game allowed you 5-6 for specific really difficult boss battles, or for a side game mode that required different kind of strategies, that would be fine and could even be really interesting. But 4 is the best standard to use for most of the game.

3 at minimum, 4 is ideal, more than that only works for ones like Disgaea.

You need a main attacker, a hybrid attacker with some offensive magic, a healer, and a main offensive mage. With 5 you can add someone to buff your stats or someone with unique abilities.
