I'm on Chapter 2 with Therion and I cannot beat the boss for anything.
Do you think grinding in this game is a must, or am I doing it wrong?

Youre doing it wrong, I never had to grind once to get through the main story. If youre doing all chapter 1's before any chapter 2's (and 2's before 3's, etc..) there should be no problem. Dont equip Cyrus's less encounters passive and dont run from any significant amount random encounters.

You mean do the chapter one for every character first?

Yes, the game is balanced for you to do all 8 chapter 1's before moving on to any chapter 2s, and all chapter 2s before 3, etc... Also go to all the secondary job shrines after you finish all the chapter 1's and before doing any chapter 2s

But after you get all the characters it matters who you have along with you as you do other chapters.

Ex: If you beat Therion's/(insert character) Chapter 2, if you bench Therion/(insert character) you will have to grind up to the recommended level to continue onto Therion's/(insert character) Chapter 3.

And that's not even including grinding skills.

never had to grind since having one lower level character going into battle gets a lot of levels quickly. i just made sure to explore and get all the treasure chests. never once had to run in circles to get powerful enough

I guess I was on the wrong approach. Guess I'll have to back out of this dungeon/house. Ugh.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Thats why you constantly rotate your party members to keep levels even and not let anyone fall behind, if you arent using the reduce encounters passive and actually fight random battles there will never be a point that youre under powered for a boss

Wouldn't rotating characters to even out levels be considering grinding tho? Similarly to Pkmn?

Seems to me you're just trading 1 form of grinding for another.

Ex: If you use Primrose's skill that nets you EXP/JP multipliers, you still have to switch characters to train them all. But before this is even possible, Primrose and co. need to be trained enough to pull this off, without dying.

I'm pretty positive there is no way you can rotate all the characters enough to even out the levels, without frequent battling.

Yeah the only thing I had to grind for was the end-game boss (the boss after every chapter 4)

Yeah chapter 2 is a big difficulty spike at one point. You have to grind a few levels up to avoid being AOE'd down by those random encounter elemental dudes.

i would say grinding is stopping progress and taking on battles. if you're going through a dungeon and getting treasure and getting closer to the boss then i wouldn't count that as grinding. if you're literally just running in circles around a save point then that would be grinding.

since you're locked into having a "main" character, they can usually pick up the slack since they're going to be a higher level. i would usually select a team to tackle a chapter and go through it. for another character's chapter, i would switch it up to a different team. those that were lower level would gain enough exp to be almost the same level as the other character, but obviously not the main.

so i had tressa as my main. i would do olberic's chapter 2. after that, i would do hannit's chapter 2, switching olberic for hannit since they're physical fighters. hannit would then gain enough levels just doing her chapter to be close enough to my other characters.

No? grinding is when you stop progressing in a game (either becasue you cant beat a boss/area or you are struggling due to being underpowered) with the explicit intent to level up characters so that you can continue. When i say swap party members out to keep levels even I mean after every chapter I completed, I would swap out the 3 characters you can change to other characters who were lower leveled and do the next chapter with them, so I would go into every chapter with my main + the 3 lowest leveled characters and by just progressing through chapters without running from a significant amount of random battles encountered during them, everyone stayed within the same level range (and strong enough to keep progressing without any trouble) and there was never a need to grind until postgame (I even unlocked the secret classes before doing all the Chapter 4s without grinding). The game isnt even THAT hard so even if you ARE somehow lagging behind, you can still easily take care of any boss thats within 5-8 levels of your party

Oh I see, you always swap 3.

Yea, I wasn't doing that.

Yeah, I only had to grind like one time when I played the game, and it was because I jumped to a chapter early.

The best way to do it is all chapter 1's, all chapter 2's etc. etc.

Which, kinda sucks, cause then you're zig zagging across the map and shit and that shit annoys me. But it is the best way.
