I know most folks probably don't keep their eyes on this stuff quite as closely, so a quick summary! Basically around the time of The Game Awards, Epic (creator of Game That Every Child in the World Loves, Fortnite) rolled out their plan to use their oodles of Fortnite dollars to create their own digital storefront, with the goal of rivaling Steam.

Their big way of breaking into the distribution game (aside from cutting exclusivity checks for games that are now having their Steam releases delayed or outright cancelled) is offering an 88/12 revenue split for developers, rather than Steam's standard 70/30 split.

Well, a new challenger approaches! Discord just announced today that they're also looking to throw their hat into the ring - with a 90/10 split for developers.

It'll be very interesting to see all these platforms duke it out. PC gamers have been used to tons of other launchers trying to horn in on Steam's territory over the years, but this is the first real movement we've seen on a potential change in the ecosystem, and it's all coming at a pretty fast clip!

I don't usually follow this sort of thing (Though it's interesting when I do), but I'd like to chime in and say that a 88/12 split is just fucking weird numerically

I'd love to see the math that went into coming up with that specific number

I, for one, refuse to install any more launchers. Steam and BattleNet is already one more than I'm comfortable with.

I like the increased competition. And I didn't know Steam's fees were that high. Surprised it took this long for people to go after them. Gog.com itch.io and Amazon kind of tried but meh ... good for Epic Games and Discord
