Board 8 > Why does everyone love Link?

I know I'm opening myself up to a flame war, but can someone explain to me why Link is in the final? I mean I love the Zelda games (most of them), but with a few exceptions Link is a blank slate - Hell I've never actually encountered Link as in every Zelda game I've played the main character has been called "Pete".

Considering it's a different Link in almost every game, how are people seeing him in this vote. Is it a combination of every link (which seems like cheating, a dozen or so characters vs 1?) or is there one favourite you have which is the one you're thinking of? Or is it just because you love the game series and forgot it's a character battle and not a franchise battle ;)

Honestly the fact Link isnt separated into several different characters is bs, almost every LoZ game has a completely different Link and putting them all together as Link is stupid. Might as well put all the Final Fantasy protagonists as one contestant, its a huge unfair advantage

For me it's less about Link and more about him being a proxy for the games. Which are extremely fun.

Because for nearly all Nintendo stuff the characters are proxies for the games. Few people probably actually care about Mario as a character, but people love his game series so he does well and stays popular. Same goes for Link. Theres nothing to really like or dislike about most Nintendo characters so they generally perform well while characters who actually have developed personalities are at risk of having mixed reception and some are only even from a single game so they dont stay relevant over time either. This site in particular mostly loves Nintendo and JRPGs so its basically a miracle for any well developed Western character to even escape the first round or two.

I'll give you the real answer

It's because this is a popularity contest

A very small minority of voters are like you and us, who think about which character is actually better.

The vast majority of voters just see a poll, they think "oh hey I know that character", they click, they vote, they move on

everyone has played zelda so link is one of the most recognizable in the contest.

and despite not being a good character, he's not bad either. his design is cool. he's neat.

so when link is vs someone that the person doesn't know and/or is from a game/series they don't care about as much, they will just vote link without thinking

and thus he makes it to the end

their thought process is "oh link is cool" and that's it

I would be interested in a short, All-Link contest, though, then maybe have only that one in the character contests. I was thinking that given the consternation over which Zelda games are any good, that some of "Link's" fans may not vote for a specific Link. That said, I am not sure it would matter much given how well Cloud does: you could argue he is almost as much a proxy for the FF series as Link is for TLoZ, especially once all the other FF characters are knocked out.

The Original, A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, and Breath of the Wild Links would be my early favorites.

The difference is that Pikachu is the same Pokmon throughout the series. Each Link is different. Yet he feels just the same.

Then explain why I was able to catch 13 Pikachus in the first game.
