PC gaming is great, but it's a steeper time/financial investment than just buying a console.

Also if you're building it yourself, there's more room for you to fuck something up.

Building a PC is easier than Legos.

Literally not true. Weve seen people in the PC forum fuck up what should be the simplest of steps. Im not saying building a pc is hard, but dont undersell the fact that some technical knowledge is required.

what technical knowledge is required? all you have to do is read the manual that comes with the motherboard lol

I've been building PCs since IBM was in the market making 486 processors.

No, it's not easier than legos. It's not particularly difficult but it's not "lego" easy. It's more like IKEA furniture except only needs one person.

I don't know shit about PCs. I got a laptop on BF.

ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360UA 13.3" QHD+ Multi-Touch 2-in-1 Notebook, Intel Quad-Core i7-7500U Upto 3.5GHz, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Windows 10 Pro 64Bit

Is this comparable to consoles? Better? Should I even bother?

It's not comparable for modern games because you don't have a graphics card. But you can do emulation for classic games that you can't do on a console.

Is it really so much more expensive than consoles nowadays? I'm not so sure considering all the nickle and diming console manufacturers put on their players now. They pay more and get less and thank the companies for the opportunity.

Maybe people don't have the money for PC gaming because they're buying multiple consoles, upgraded versions of those same consoles, overpaying for games and peripherals and paying fees just to play online.

You should ignore those people most of the time. Affordable prebuilts (even laptops) are usually powerful enough to run most games just fine at least at console level quality.

It's not the olden days where PC's absolutely sucked if you got prebuilt.

You can continue to invest in a good PC, for years. You could potentially have thousands in one. I've only ever bought one PS4, and that's it. Games aside, I'd probably spend more cash on a PC.

Since there is no DRM built in there is far more "illegal shit" to begin with.

The best thing that happened PC gaming was when they started to consolizing itself.
But I guess you are too young to remember PC gaming before Steam.

Want to play this new game that you have installed?
I'm sorry, you don't have enough free memory, go create a boot disk.
Wow, I got enough free memory to start the game, let's play for 13 minutes before I discover that I require more free memory later and crash.
Oh, you want to load the sound driver and your controller driver? Sorry, only got enough free memory to load one of them.
Oh, your sound card is not one of the four supported sound cards? I guess you can always try the PC Speaker if you want sound...
You want smooth scrolling like that Super Mario Bros game on the Nes? Good luck with that, we are still years away from when Romero hacked those VGA drivers...
It was revolutionary for PC gaming when Microsoft started to standardize APIs with DirectX and things became even easier when Valve turned Steam from a DRM software into a content providing software.
So yes, PC gaming is more like how consoles used to be now.

Price is the only real complaint I have about PC gaming

I mean, really, if you factor in that you were probably going to buy a non-gaming laptop or desktop in the next couple of years anyway, then the price almost works out to being about equal. You're just paying more upfront.

3 to 5 year purchases...

$500 non-gaming PC
$300 console
$300 for 5 years Plus
------------------------------
$1,100 Total

You can do a lot in the PC market space for $1,100. For $1,500 you can walk away with a nice 1080p, 60FPS build (and I mean monitor, keyboard, everything.)

I spent $1500 when I first built mine about 5 years ago (buying everything new including OS, optical drive, m&kb, etc.) and have put in about $1000 since then on upgrades and a couple replacements.

PC gaming can definitely be a cheaper option overall. And your breakdown is literally the first one I've seen that's not bullshit. I just hate when people act like you can get amazing performance out of some $300-$400 build that will last an entire 5+ year generation. My 970 alone was about $350 when it first came out and even that wasn't maxing new games at 1080p60 like people claim uber-budget builds will.

It definitely is but PC + PS4 Pro is an awesome combination. Going to upgrade my PC next month. Adding 8gb more ram (currently only running 8gb) and upgrading to a 1080 Ti (I'd love a 2080 but it's a little too expensive) from current 1060.

I bought myself a 32" 2k 144hz curved monitor as well which is amazing. Can't wait for the new card so I can fully utilise it.

I'll chime in here.

I've been console gaming since NES all the way through and currently have a PS4 and NS.

However, I just recently put together a little gaming PC and have to admit it's a great addition to my gaming options.

Steam overlay is great, controller binding is awesome, playing old OG Xbox and 360 games with adjustable settings and content that was removed is a sick pleasure.

I love my consoles and my new gaming machine and it's not anything super special either. But it' just FUN and having access to all sorts of different content for super cheap deals is amazing.

Also patches, mods, and community support has been a great new adventure. The PC user discussions have been a pleasure as well overall they act more mature. Not to say there aren't some people trolling and acting dumb but overall much better experience.

Edit: I also play on my 55" from my couch with a wireless keyboard and mouse to navigate OS and such but seamlessly move into the DS4, 360 controller, NS Pro-Controller, and even the steam controller (but I don't really use it for much it just feels weird).

Also the touch pad on the DS4 is super useful in some games when set-up correctly.

Console exclusives are better than PC exclusives by far, all the decent PC only games end up coming to consoles, the only ending factor becomes "do you want to spend thousands to make this game look prettier". Let's be real now. You can go pick up an Xbox One right now at Gamestop for $170 + tax. It'll run every game ever released for it without messing with settings or wondering if it'll be strong enough. Hell, it'll even run 360 and original xbox one games. Add $5 a month and you can get Xbox Game Pass, a lot of games that you might not have played, great deal for casual gamers. They even have the Halo MCC on there, along with DmC Devil May Cry, all xbox one exclusives, etc..

add in the online fee($10 a month or $60 a year) and you're pretty much set. Game pass & gold are also frequently bundled together. You can probably find them combined for $100. Not even the price of 2 new games and you probably won't have to buy any games unless they're brand new multiplats AND you're able to play RDR2, KH3, among other console exclusives.

For the PS4, thats another beast where it'll run you $100 more unless you find someone on craigslist or something selling for $200 but you end up with better exclusives.
