nah it's pretty universal that people were meant to care for and empathize with other people, and there's plenty of evidence showing the upsides of civic engagement. I didn't say you had to give up hedonistic pleasure (in fact you shouldn't) but that's different than pursuing hedonistic pleasure to the exclusion of other sorts of pursuits

if you're asking about it you're clearly interested, and in real life there's no actual trade off between the two unless you have some kind of addiction problem (even that is pretty manageable)

though if you're saying you're just interested in base pleasures that is either a lie or yeah I'd argue a pretty sad existence, that is controversial though!

i think one large gap in caring about stuff is that most of the return you get on volunteering and etc is in the socializing and the chemical reward for doing something good. while the ideal reward, however, is changing something in a significant way, a much harder accomplishment

things can also get really sticky if you decide to care
like maybe i care about an issue and pick a side and start volunteering my time to the police because i feel like BLM has maligned them in ways that they're not fully worthy of?
now i'm potentially a racist and bad guy for any number of reasons?
it's a lot easier to just not give a shit

now there are some things you could care about that would never be at issue?
giving time to kids like at a boys and girls club or something
helping community initiatives to better life for neighbors
spending time at an old folk's home to help out and keep company
