Haven't looked outside yet but it's been just rainy and cold here in northern Alabama. IIRC the news said there was a chance of snow soon, but it's not even below freezing here

Dont think youll be getting any snow in AL sorry, other than maybe a few flakes in the northernmost counties. IDK where TC is but looks like Raleigh is changing over to mixed precip now so totals there may be lower than in some forecasts. Latest 6-hr snowfall total forecast from the NWS:

Heres the rain/snow changeover moving north toward RDU. Top panel is standard radar using surface observations to estimate where its falling as snow(blue); exactly what the second one does is a bit complicated but the short version is that the yellow and blue colours mean the precipitation its detecting is less uniform in shape than in the red areas further north, indicating a mix of snow, sleet and rain.

Latest NWS 6-hr snowfall forecast up until 1PM EST. Raleigh/Durham have had 3-6" so far judging by storm reports, with 10-12" south of the Asheville area and 16.9" in Henderson County NC the highest I've seen so far.

Ice is the bigger issue. It tends to get hot enough midday to melt the snow, then cold enough again to refreeze into ice which both citizens and governments are badly equipped to handle.

Nice. =) Love that fresh snowfall look, it's so damn pretty. Looks neat from satellite too when there's a big snowfall, can't see most of the snow from this storm yet because of all the cloud but CONUS snow cover is already at a record high for this time of year, at least in the 50 or so years we've been monitoring it.

You can see plenty of snow up in the northern Plains states, and a stripe across the Midwest, plus that area in the TX panhandle that got up to 10" from this storm. The second image is false-colour using IR and visible combined to make the snow cover (yellow) distinct from the low cloud (light blue). You can also see the swirling hook shape of the storm more easily with the high ice clouds shown up in that peach colour. Click to open these in a new tab on a big screen for the full awesome.

I remember last winter on Twitter, one time Felicia Day (native Alabaman, went to college in south Texas, then moved to L.A.) said she'd just put on a jacket because it was in the 60's, then wrote "I wouldn't survive anywhere else in the country, would I?" ^_^

Weird. I don't consider it cold until 40-50, at least insofar as putting on a light jacket or something. But I like the cold. (And even then that's probably not too cold outside of the South.)

Mine went out last night from like 10:30 until some time in the night.

We just barricaded ourselves in the master bedroom. It wasn't super cold outside but with Baby DevsBro being a month old we wanted to take every precaution. Fortunately, it only dropped by like 10 degreees even in the rest of the house. Our thermostat is battery powered so I could watch it.

Fortunately, I didn't end up having to feed or change the baby in the dark.

First off, it's only 37F (with a scheduled high of 39), and second, my landlord is too cheap to hire a snowplow, so while the roads up here are more or less good, once the sun goes down I won't be able to get out of my parking lot because everything will refreeze. -_-

Where I work at least, the manager doesn't count it against you if schools are shut down, which they were yesterday.
