The third woman, Tchiya Amet, accused Tyson of drugging and raping her when they were grad students at the University of Texas in 1984. Amet, who previously went by Staci Hambric, told Patheos that the alleged sexual encounter caused her to drop out of the astronomy program and seek therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder.

I woke up in his bed; I was naked When he saw that I had woken up, he got on top of me and mounted me, and I passed out again, Amet recalled.

Tyson said he had a brief relationship with an astro-graduate student that quickly fizzled. He added that they ran into each other a few years later, when she was pregnant.

More than thirty years later, as my visibility-level took another jump, I read a freshly posted blog accusing me of drugging and raping a woman I did not recognize by either photo or name, Tyson wrote Saturday. Turned out to be the same person who I dated briefly in graduate school. She had changed her name and lived an entire life, married with children, before this accusation.

Tyson denied the drug and rape allegation and said it has been used as a kind of solicitation-bait by at least one journalist to bring out of the woodwork anybody who had any encounter with me that left them uncomfortable.

I don't suppose anyone here bothered to read the accusation?

According to the report, Tyson "drunkenly approached" the woman at the event and allegedly proceeded to make "sexual jokes and propositioned her to join him alone in his office."

The woman claims she informed her employer of the encounter in order to decline a "proposed collaboration with Tyson."

Doesn't sound that bad tbh. His apology for the others (which were similarly not bad) was good, too.

Or, or, how about they come forward as soon as it occurs instead of putting it off forever until someone decides to jump on the "MeToo" bandwagon as it's gaining steam. That way, it remains fresh in their mind as opposed to "trying to remember" what happened so-and-so years ago.

Imagine being a private in the navy and the admiral does something to you he shouldn't. What's your next course of action? Bear in mind, you have no proof, his word against yours. Also speaking against him will absolutely destroy your military career.

Dont forget how, if you do choose to speak out, you will have to tell the embarrassing story of what the admiral did to you dozens of times in excruciating detail for everyone you know to hear, and you will be raked over the coals for every detail, where even if you dont make a single mistake in your retelling, you will STILL probably be called a liar and get death threats from the admirals buddies and admirers. Thats your identity now.

Well, if you had any sort of self-respect and dignity, you'd report any unwarranted sexual harassment immediately. Someone speaking against a higher up should come with irrefutable proof. and if there's no previous history between the two of you, it shouldn't be seen as an attempt to want to sabotage your admiral's career.

If a man is clearly distraught about what just occurred, I'm pretty sure people aren't going to shrug it off as if nothing happened.

Really? That's very noble of you. Now remember, as far as you're concerned, the admiral is god. As far as the people you speak to (other miltitary personnel), the admiral is god. Your friends think the admiral is god. Your family thinks the admiral is god. Literally every person who could conceivably help you will also be crushed for crossing the admiral.

But you, you're just gonna go out and call the admiral a rapist with no proof whatsoever? You're going to call into question the moral character of a medal of honour holder? And all you have is that you happened to be in the same place at the same time? And just hope it all works out in your favour?

It's noble of you to say this, but frankly I think you're full of shit. You can't be angry at someone for being oppressed into silence.

Why would someone go out of their way to tarnish the reputation of an admiral just because. It's not every day you see a man speaking up against sexual harassment. Given you're in good standing, there's no reason to defy your word.

How does that comment contradict what I said earlier? You shouldn't accuse others of misconduct just for the hell out of it. If you have a factual case, or a story to tell, by all means do so.

I mean, that's typical of high profile cases because people are scared to come forward for fear of the backlash. Usually cases like this aren't a "one and done" type event, so once that first person comes forward then it gives others the confidence and safety to do so as well.
