If they were encouraging people to buy all three, that would have been scammy, but it was just to get people to use the trading mechanic to get exclusives.

why not just have all the pokemon available in a single game? Let's not pretend we don't know the goal here was to get people to double dip

the goal was to get your friends to buy different versions so you can trade. wouldnt make sense if you had more than one version to yourself because unless you had two gameboys for some reason, how are you actually going to get all the pokemon?

Yeah only the truly crazy ever bought all 3 versions of Pokemon.

Though to be honest, on 4th gen I guess I bought 2 of the versions. For gen 3 I only stuck with Sapphire, and it didn't feel like I missed out on anything.

But it's difficult to call the Pokemon Company "Nintendo" though, since they kinda get to do whatever they want

Lmao, getting 2 versions for yourself was only feasible if you had multiple Gameboys. No, version exclusives and trading were features added to encourage kids to convince their friends to get the other version. Hell, there are Pokmon that only evolve from trading.

3rd version problem hasnt existed since Gen 4. Remake arent churned out every gen like people thought they would be.

If that was the case they would let players trade within the one system but you can't. I'd say it's pretty unlikely they expect people two own two Game Boys to trade Pokmon.

There's a reason Pokemon is a portable game. They want you to go out there to trade and battle with people.

Gee, how many people without self control do you think there are in this world? I know a lot of people who play Pokemon irl and literally none of them buys 2 versions. In fact, we usually communicate to each other what version each other will be buying so there's at least one person with the other version.

As far as I know, having 2 versions enhances the experience without forcing you to buy both. I don't see a problem with it

Growing up, everyone basically played Pokemon but basically no one had both versions of the game. Your right that splitting the versions was a money move, but it was more to make kids convince their friends into getting the game.

They basically found away to turn peer pressure into a marketing tool.

You can say it is pretty scummy to lock content between different versions, but not so much to get people to buy the same game twice. Like everyone said it was a business decision to make promote kids getting different version (and convince mommy and daddy to get a link cable) so they can trade and battle with one another. I managed to get by this by getting a game shark, first play the pokemon game legitimedely and then use the game sharknto get pokemon i otherwise couldnt get in that version.

Nintendo has been drilling into everyone's brains that the point of multiple versions is to encourage social interaction. They've been doing this for TWENTY PLUS ****ing years, so stop. Your fraught.

Actually, I got one to trade with myself in Animal Crossing: New Leaf >__>

I gave it away after getting the Zelda: ALBW 3DS XL... and then later I got the Hyrule Edition New 3DS

so that's 4 total

So why do it? The trading mechanic isn't limited by hardware anymore, so that doesn't make sense to me. Why split the pokemon you can collect into entirely separate games that cost $60 each?

My biggest beef with nintendo isn't this. Nor is it even their anti-media stance on reviewers on youtube and copyright.

No what I fucking HATE about Nintendo is that they fully believe that a 3 hour platform game that a toddler could beat is worth 50 and their prices never go down, because fuck you.
