For gen 3 I only stuck with Sapphire, and it didn't feel like I missed out on anything. In fact, we usually communicate to each other what version each other will be buying so there's at least one person with the other version. As far as I know, having 2 versions enhances the experience without forcing you to buy both. Like everyone said it was a business decision to make promote kids getting different version (and convince mommy and daddy to get a link cable) so they can trade and battle with one another.
