I mean, I loved Infinity War and it's probably one of my favourite movies ever but I'm not really sure about this new film. In the comics it was the result of an accident involving a Kree superweapon that blew up, and the combination of her hybridized DNA and the explosion yadayadayada super powers that can't be replicated, etc etc. The trailer also makes it look like they boosted her powers to their secondary level (which didn't happen in the comics for like 12 years), as part of their push to market her as THE MOST POWERFUL HERO EVARZ because ladyparts. Why is the movie version so powerful? Ehh. From what we see a Kree blood transfusion is at least part of it, though it's hard to say what else they do to her. Potentially not - both tanked kind of hard in the comics, and Marvel will bank off the surprise success of Black Panther for at least a few more films. That'll hold them off until they decide to push a solo Nick Fury flashback adventure or bring Luke Cage into the MCU. Or do a Blade reboot. If anything, we're just going to get Winter Soldier as new Cap the way it happened in the comics and the way they've wanted to almost from the first movie. Odds are we'll never see Riri in the MCU, because she has the misfortune of being TWO minorities, which is usually one too many when it comes to trying to diversity cast a mainstream blockbuster (Black? Yes. Woman? Sure. Black woman? Nuh-uh, not a main character in MY movie!). That same logic probably played a role in why we got Carol Danvers (ie, the worst Captain Marvel ever), as opposed to sassy black lady Monica Rambeau Captain Marvel (who is apparently relegated to supporting cast as a sort of easter egg in this movie) or magic space lesbian Captain Marvel. Carol's a female so that helps get people off their back for the whole "DC HAD A WONDER WOMAN MOVIE WHY DON'T YOU HAVE ANY MOVIES WITH FEMALE LEADS?!" deal, but she's also dishwater bland and white as the driven snow, so she's not going to alienate TOO many potential audience members. Honestly, if Marvel ever gives us an MCU ethnic female lead at all any time soon, it's almost certainly going to be Ms. Marvel, because people actually LIKE her. But that might depend entirely on how this movie does. It's easier to spin Kamala off as separate movie if this one is huge, less so if this one tanks. ...though I still hope the mainstream press somehow pick up on the time that Carol had a time-baby raped into her, which then grew up to be the guy who raped her in the first place, and then the two of them went off to have consensual sex together and all the Avengers were totally cool with it until it turned out later that it was all mind-control and totally 112% rape the entire time. Because it would be funny to see how the usual gender politics types would react to that.
