There are several things that actually become much more complicated without EVs and items. First, the lack of EVs means that mixed attacking is now a viable strategy for certain Pokemon, a perfect example being mega Charizard X. This rather dramatically changes the kinds of movesets that are viable on certain Pokemon. it also means that Pokemon that previously had a not quite as high but still high alternative attack stat no longer have essentially wasted stat points. Because of this, there's really no downside to choosing a plus attack minus defense nature, instead of the stereotypical modest or adamant, or timid / jolly.

Also, the lack of items creates a metagame where hyper offense doesn't really exist anymore. You're not going to lead with a Pokemon that can set up and sweep almost immediately. Most pokemon have enough HP and defenses to survive at least one hit. This almost reminds me of the way gen 1 played.

It also means that faster Pokemon are always going to be faster than slower Pokemon, due to the lack of focus sash and EVs. This makes speed Pokemon more predictable, but also more useful. Dugtrio, Dodrio, See and Electrode are now a lot more important.

Another strange side effect is that if you have multiple Pokemon that can theoretically mega evolve, you can choose which one to do it with on the fly. This also holds true for mega Charizard, who has two options. You can basically choose which one to do based on the situation you're in.

So hyper-simplifying the battle system actually threw a wrench in it and shook things up? Sounds like fun. If Pokemon Showdown put in a format like this but included all of the Pokemon from gen 1-7, I'd be really interested in trying it.

Not worth actually buying Let's Go for it though IMO.

Sounds like it's not as badly nerfed as I had believed. Although still, the fact that I don't have (and don't plan to get) a Switch at the moment means I won't be playing it. I am open to getting one if it gets more good "exclusives" (in quotes because I'd include games that aren't exclusive but also aren't on any other system I have - although that'd pretty much mean "It's on Switch and XB1, but not PS4 or PC", which I don't think would happen very often), but so far, there isn't one convincing enough for me to get the system.

It really doesn't nerf the game at all. In some ways it actually makes the game a lot less cookie cutter.

there are enough strong pokes with it and the move itself is strong enough to not give players any reason to not run it

I mean even just aero, rhydon, and the nidos having it makes it a given in nearly every match, and it totally shuts off pokes like charizard from being viable

So youre going to see those 5 on any serious team. Entry hazards are just that good, especially Stealth Rocks which punishes a lot of Pokmon due to the fact that Rock is SE against 4 types and only 3 resist it

Still takes x2 damage and has to be mega evolved to even have that. Otherwise its still 4x. When there is no way to remove rocks its beneficial to get them out ASAP because they tip the momentum in favor of who has them up

yeah you would realistically be starting with Zard to have him megad pre-rocks and even then you are still likely tanking rock slides from rhydon/aero or surf from nidoking

really theres just no reason not to run and rush free damage on everything

It's signature move, Double Iron Bash, is a 120 BP move with a high chance of flinching, it's ability is Iron Fist but of course it's turned off for this game and it's got a 143 base attack so combine that with a nature like Adamant and it'd one shot most things.....if it were able to move first, it's speed is horrid at a 34 base and it's sp.def is no better at 64 base leaving it in danger of being one shotted by common moves like Aura Sphere, Flamethrower and Earth Power.

So what youre saying is, its a monster in Trick Room.

Whether or not its legendary or mythic is important anyways because that determines if it can be used in VGC

The Stealth Rocks thing kind of sucks, but it does lead to some interesting decisions on what to lead with. You can lead with a stealth rocks setup, but someone throwing out a counter can give them a lot of momentum. Victreebell or Dugtrio, for instance.

I was theorizing with some people about the let's go metagame the day it came out and honestly it doesn't sound super good. candies let everything bulk up to an extreme degree (like, look at chansey's stats) so everything's going to be super defensive. also stealth rock with no rapid spin sucks and psychic pokemon are just as strong as ever, though now at least there's a psychic immune pokemon unlike gen1 where there were none at all

You can turn off candy boosts entirely

And psychics are not overpowered. There are plenty of bug and dark type moves, unlike Gen 1.

Venomoth decimates every psychic type.

venomoth cannot safely switch in on any psychic type at risk of being OHKO'd by psychic, and is outsped by a handful of them so can't even revenge kill well (starmie, jynx, alakazam). psychic's power here doesn't come from having no weaknesses, it comes from there not being a lot of pokemon that resist it

turning off candies is good though will probably make things much more interesting
